During the first night of the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, Netflix’s coming-of-age miniseries The Queen’s Gambit won big, taking home a total of seven awards in the categories of cinematography, costumes, editing, makeup, production design, sound editing and mixing.

The Queen’s Gambit creator Scott Frank assembled a strong team, many of whom have worked with him before, including on Godless. “That team is like a family,” said winning editor Michelle Tesoro. “It’s just nice when you love everybody on the team and it’s fun. It’s all about showing up to work and appreciating everything.”

Other big winners on Saturday evening included Disney+’s The Mandalorian, FX’s Pose and NBC’s Saturday Night Live, each receiving three Emmys. Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and Disney+’s Wandavision also walked away with two wins each.

The Queen’s Gambit was crowned Netflix’s biggest scripted limited series at the end of last year after debuting in October 2020, with 62 million households streaming the series in its first 28 days.

The series tells the story of Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy), a chess prodigy who rises to the top of the game while grappling with addiction issues, eventually defeating even the most skilled opponents. The series also stars Bill Camp, Moses Ingram, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and more.

The awards ceremony will continue today, Sunday, September 12, 2021, announcing winners selected by a jury and previously announced for categories in animation, costume, interactive programming and motion design.
