Alanis Morissette Rips New Bill Simmons Produced HBO Documentary About Her Life: “This Was Not the Story I Agreed to Tell”

Famed singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette is opening up about the inaccuracies in Jagged, an upcoming HBO documentary that focuses on the period of her life when she was writing, recording, and touring in support of her multiplatinum 1995 album Jagged Little Pill. In a statement released by her publicist (via the L.A. Times), Morissette bashed the final product — even though she voluntarily sat for hours of interviews for the film.

The upcoming rock doc charts the singer’s rise to fame in her early 20s, leading up to the release of her hit album Jagged Little Pill. Jagged, one of the series of “Music Box” films produced by Bill Simmons and Ringer Films, is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival today before debuting on HBO this November. Despite signing off on the project initially, Morissette has vowed not promote the doc at all throughout its release.

“I was lulled into a false sense of security and their salacious agenda became apparent immediately upon my seeing the first cut of the film,” Morissette said in her statement. “This is when I knew our visions were in fact painfully diverged. This was not the story I agreed to tell.”

Per the story, Morissette agreed to participate in director Alison Klayman‘s doc understanding that it would celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album’s release. But as she was interviewed, things began to change. Her publicist wrote that the interviews took place “during a very vulnerable time” in the midst of her “third postpartum depression during lockdown.”

“I sit here now experiencing the full impact of having trusted someone who did not warrant being trusted,” Morissette continued. “Not unlike many ‘stories’ and unauthorized biographies out there over the years, this one includes implications and facts that are simply not true. While there is beauty and some elements of accuracy in this/my story to be sure— I ultimately won’t be supporting someone else’s reductive take on a story much too nuanced for them to ever grasp or tell.”

Neither Morissette nor her publicist clarified what implications and facts are untrue in the doc. The film is slated to get into Morissette’s history of alleged sexual abuse. Before discussing the subject in the film, Morissette does tell Klayman that she’s “going to need some help because I never talk about this.”

Bill Simmons, the former ESPN columnist turned podcast magnate, clearly feels differently about the finished product. During an interview in July about the well-received Woodstock ’99 doc that his Spotify-owned company produced, he told Deadline that “I just think it’s a great story, a kid from Canada who is blowing up … I watched [it] with my daughter and she listened to Alanis’ music for three weeks after.”

Jagged will release on HBO on Nov. 19.
