‘Dopesick’ Trailer: Michael Keaton and Kaitlyn Dever’s New Series Tackles the Opioid Crisis

Hulu’s upcoming drama Dopesick is tackling the worst drug epidemic in American history: The opioid crisis. Today, the streamer released a trailer for the eight-episode miniseries, which chronicles the rise and impact of OxyContin from the perspective of its creator, Purdue Pharma — who downplayed its addictive qualities in order to sell the drug to patients, especially working-class miners — as well as the doctors and patients dealing impacted by the epidemic across the country.

Executive producer Michael Keaton stars as Dr. Samuel Finnix, who is convinced to prescribe OxyContin to patients like Kaitlyn Dever’s character Betsy. Michael Stuhlbarg plays Richard Sackler, the son of Purdue Pharma’s founder who was responsible for developing and marketing the drug. Over the course of the trailer, we see Richard instructing his employees to insist that less than 1% of patients become addicted to OxyContin, despite its highly addictive qualities.

“It could soon become Purdue’s first billion-dollar drug,” Richard says.

Inspired by the real-life epidemic and Beth Macy’s book of the same name, Dopesick tracks the crisis from the Purdue boardroom to the mines of Virginia to the DEA, where “heroes will emerge in an intense and thrilling ride to take down the craven corporate forces behind this national crisis and their allies.”

Dopesick also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Will Poulter, and Rosario Dawson. Guest stars include Phillipa Soo and Jake McDorman.

The series is written by Emmy winner Danny Strong, and directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson. Executive producers include Strong, Keaton, Levinson, John Goldwyn, Warren Littlefield, Beth Macy, and Karen Rosenfelt.

The first three episodes of Dopesick premiere on Hulu on Wednesday, October 13, with subsequent episodes streaming weekly. Scroll up to watch the full trailer.
