Why is ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Ending?

Get ready to say goodbye to Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), Captain Holt (Andre Braugher), and all the other friendly faces of Brooklyn’s 99th precinct. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is coming to a close tonight, debuting the last episode(s) of it’s eighth and final season on NBC. Wondering why Mike Schur‘s hit police comedy has to come to an end? We have a little insight to share as to why, exactly, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is ending.

The eighth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has mirrored real-life events happening across the nation — for example, it’s dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests. Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) quit her job at the station, and Hitchcock retired. Everything seems to be up in the air as the protests rock the station to its core — how will Season 8 tie things up?

Here’s everything we know about the Brooklyn Nine-Nine finale, from how you can watch it to why it’s wrapping up.

Why is Brooklyn Nine-Nine ending?

This isn’t the first time Brooklyn Nine-Nine has reached a closing point. Back in Season 5 of the series, Fox actually canceled the show. It was later saved by NBC for three more seasons, and now, it’s reached a closing point.

“I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve,” showrunner Dan Goor said when the conclusion was announced. “When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy (Samberg), he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”

But the ending also comes after many cast members of the series publicly commented on re-examining their show after the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests around the nation.

“We’re taking a step back, and the writers are all rethinking how we’re going to move forward, as well as the cast,” star Andy Samberg told People at the time. “We’re all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now, and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about.”

So, could the show’s ending be related to that? Possibly. As of now, Goor’s statement above is the official reason why Brooklyn Nine-Nine is ending, though.
