New Movies On Demand: ‘Prisoners Of The Ghostland,’ ‘Together,’ ‘Best Sellers,’ + More

Nicolas Cage returns to his action hero days, and Sharon Horgan and James McAvoy spend quarantine together in this week’s new movies on VOD. The Cage-led Prisoners Of The Ghostland has an East Meets West vibe thanks to it’s setting, Samurai Town, a mashup of Old West and Japanese aesthetics. In the film, Cage plays Hero, a man who is rigged with explosives and will meet his end if he can’t bring home a young woman who has run away from her family.

In Together, which was filmed over ten days during lockdown in response to the global attempts to contain COVID, Horgan and McAvoy and their perfect accents spend quarantine holed up in their home along with their son, Artie, as their marriage crumbles. What could have played out as a more tragic version of A Marriage Story is much more darkly humorous thanks the the actors’ comedic sensibilities and the sense that lockdown, and their strife, will end eventually. (IT WILL, RIGHT?)

And finally, Best Sellers, which stars Aubrey Plaza and Michael Caine, a perfect combination given both of their talents with deadpan delivery. When Plaza’s character, Lucy, inherits a failing book publishing house, she discovers that a reclusive author named Harris Shaw (Caine) owes her a book that he reluctantly delivers. Shaw is old-school and hates the idea of book tours and using social media to promote himself but his cranky personality proves to be magnetic and garners him thousands of followers against his will. Like its predecessors The Intern and The Space Between, Best Sellers is a story about what happens when boomers and millennials unite and realize they have more in common than they thought.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Prisoners Of The Ghostland

Just one look at the Prisoners Of The Ghostland trailer and you’ll get the sense that no other actor besides Nicolas Cage could quite pull off the role of Hero. Though Cage has always been a master of unstable mad men with good hearts, he loves making interesting choices when it comes to his projects. Prisoners Of The Ghostland is a completely bonkers premise: Cage’s character must rescue a young girl, the granddaughter of the local “Governor” (Bill Moseley), from the Ghostland, a twisted, futuristic plot on the edge of town, but if he proves unsuccessful after five days, the self-destructing suit he’s been forced to wear will explode and he’ll die. Add this to the introspective Pig that Cage also starred in this summer and you’ve got yourself a wild double feature.

Together

Familiarity breeds contempt, and quarantine is a breeding ground for familiarity, basically. Together is the story of what happens when a married couple is forced to live in lockdown together for over a year with limited contact with anyone else, for better or, mostly, for worse. The premise could sound like a dystopian nightmare if it wasn’t actually most of our realities for the past eighteen months. Directed by Stephen Daldry, the film stars James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan who perfectly perform the roles as bitter but hilarious husband and wife who, as McAvoy’s character explains, are navigating “the love that exists beyond hate.”
