Is Emma Mackey Leaving ‘Sex Education’?

*** Sex Education Season 3 spoilers ahead ***

The third season of Sex Education delivered a medley of wonderful moments: The opening musical montage, the evolution of Eric and Adam, and, of course, Otis and Maeve admitting they have feelings for each other in the fifth episode of the season. The stars seemed to have aligned for Moordale’s ill-fated lovers as Sex Education fans were finally going to see the Otis/Maeve romance they’ve been clamoring for since jump street. But in typical Sex Education fashion, there was a roadblock on the couple’s journey toward happily ever after.

Earlier in the season, Maeve applied for a gifted and talented program located in America. She was accepted (naturally), but she didn’t have the funds to attend the program. In the final episode of Season 3, Maeve’s mother Erin — who was on the run for, you know, that whole kidnapping her daughter debacle — was able to cobble together some money by “selling some shit” to help Maeve pay for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “You never left me behind; I left you behind,” Erin says to her daughter during their tearful exchange. “I was too young and stupid to have kids. I’ve let you down over and over again. That’s why I need you to take this money and go to America.”

In the penultimate scene of the third season, Maeve informs Otis that she’s going to America. When Otis asks about the state of their relationship, she tells him that “we’ll have to see where we’re at when I’m back.” The final scene of Season 3 is of Maeve on a bus as she passes a sign that says “You are now leaving Moordale. Come back soon.”

IS EMMA MACKEY LEAVING SEX EDUCATION?

We don’t have any official information regarding the future of Sex Education, but we fully expect the series to be renewed for a fourth season. While we also can’t say with 100% certainty that Emma Mackey will be back, it’s almost a given that the actress will return for a fourth season. I mean, she even says “we’ll have to see where we’re at when I’m back.”

The Otis/Maeve storyline is the beating heart of the series. Maeve leaving to study in America for a few months is an organic obstacle to Otis and Maeve’s inevitable romance. This seems like a natural part of the story and we fully expect a potential fourth season of Sex Education to include Emma Mackey.

WILL EMMA MACKEY BE IN SEX EDUCATION SEASON 4?

We believe so. One of the final scenes of the season even hints at Maeve’s eventual return to Moordale.

Otis: So this is goodbye?
Maeve: No, no. It’s… see you soon.

While we don’t quite know what the future holds for Otis and Maeve — Ruby helping Otis and Eric in Episode 7 was an interesting development, and Maeve could meet someone new in America — we strongly believe Emma Mackey will be back for Season 4.
