It just goes to show that if you believe, you can do anything. Ted Lasso just won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmys, beating out Black-ish, Cobra Kai, Emily in Paris, The Flight Attendant, Hacks, The Kominsky Method, and PEN15. This win makes Apple TV+ the first streaming service in history to win in a program category in its first two years of eligibility. It’s a win for anyone who likes nice shows about nice people being nice. But also? We all knew this was coming.
Ted Lasso‘s domination of the 2021 Emmys has been the story of this awards season. Altogether the Apple TV+ comedy was nominated for 13 Primetime Emmys, the most of any single show. Not only that, but those 13 nominations made TV history with Ted Lasso breaking Glee’s record for the most nominations for a freshman comedy. Those nominations weren’t small fish, either. In addition to Outstanding Comedy Series, Jason Sudeikis was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series; Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series; Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham were nominated forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series; and Zach Braff, MJ Delaney, and Declan Lowney were nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

As exciting as Ted Lasso’s sweep has been, it’s one victory of many for Apple TV+. The newish streaming service made history early, landing its first Emmy for Billy Crudup in The Morning Show in 2020. It also had a notable showing during the 2021 Creative Emmys. The streaming service took home seven Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special for Boys State as well as awards for Calls, For All Mankind, and Carpool Karaoke: The Series.
If you haven’t caught up on Apple TV+’s gem, why are you watching the Emmys? Stop that, treat yourself to some unrelenting optimism and support, and put on Bill Lawrence’s impossible-to-hate hit. The comedy follows a sweet football coach (Sudeikis) who solely speaks in Southern-inspired analogies as he tries to coach a soccer team in the UK. An upbeat American versus a nation full of British grumps? You better believe international antics ensue. Congratulations, Ted Lasso. It’s a victory that’s well-deserved.
