Edie Falco’s Carmela Soprano Cameo Was Cut From ‘The Many Saints of Newark’

Don’t expect to see Carmela Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark. Alan Taylor, the director of the upcoming Sopranos prequel film, recently revealed that actress Edie Falco reprised her role from the iconic HBO series, but her only scene was ultimately omitted from the final theatrical cut.

“We had Edie come in and she dressed as Carmela and we shot something with her, and it wound up not being in the final movie, but it was a great excuse to see her again,” Taylor, a veteran Sopranos director, told NME.

“She’s so ridiculously talented and she’s also one of those people who — and it seems to frequently be women — that manage to be perfect actors and also the sanest people you’ve ever met in your life,” he continued. “I think Frances McDormand is like that and Edie Falco has that same quality of being like a solid, good, sane person. It was good to see her again.”

Taylor added that Falco’s scene had been part of a proposed opening for the film, but they later decided to “begin it in a very different way.”

However, that doesn’t mean cameos from other Sopranos cast members are out of the question.

Later in the interview, Taylor teased, “Not to give away too much but, when you make a movie you’re not exactly sure the final shape it’s going to be and we, believe it or not, shot a few things that included other cast members.”

The Many Saints of Newark stars the late James Gandolfini’s son Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano, who’s forced to navigate the mafia war unfolding around him in 1960s New Jersey and grows into the Sopranos mob boss protagonist viewers know in the process. The drama’s cast also includes Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Vera Farmiga, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Leslie Odom Jr., Michaela De Rossi, and Ray Liotta.

David Chase, who created the original series,w rote the film alongside Lawrence Konner.

The Many Saints of Newark will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1. The film will stream for free to HBO Max subscribers on the non-ad supported tier for 31 days before leaving the platform.
