7 Shows Like ‘Squid Game’

Squid Game is a new hit mystery series streaming on Netflix, and believe it or not, it’s not actually about squids. Despite the show’s lack of soft-bodied molluscs, the Korean show quickly soared into the Netflix Top 10 immediately after the show’s premiere on September 17. If you’re a fan of all mind game series, thrillers, or mystery dramas, you’re not going to want to miss this bonkers series. If you’ve already watched the whole thing and are yearning for more shows to twist your brain, we’ve got a few in mind.

Squid Game follows a young father scrapped for cash and desperate for any funds to help him raise his daughter. After he scores an invite to a mysterious game, he decides to enter and try his hand at winning a fortune. But the games grow deadly, and he realizes there’s a lot more in store than just poker or board games.

'Liar Game'

Liar Game follows almost the same structure as Squid Game: a young woman receives a package with a bunch of money and a note that informs her that she’s now a contestant of the Liar Game. In the tournament, she’ll have to cheat and scheme her way to the top if she wants a chance at the top prize. She’ll have to outsmart the biggest con men of them all if she wants to walk away with any of the money she came with — in fact, she might even have to take down the Liar Game from the inside.

3% takes place in the distant future, in which most of the population lives in poverty on a place called “The Inland.” But there is a way out: each year, every 20-year-old gets to partake in a series of tests that will allow them a chance to move away from The Inland. Only 3 percent of the kids make it to the new and better world, and they’ll have to fight for their lives once they arrive to the new location. If you loved the mystery and sci-fi aspects of Squid Game, you’ll surely be taken by 3%.

'Black Mirror'

If you haven’t watched Black Mirror yet, we definitely recommend giving it a spin after Squid Game. The series basically predicts what’s going to happen in the future — er, today’s world. Episodes include creepy video games, messed up singing competitions, out-of-hand social media rating platforms, and more. Squid Game feels like it could honestly be a part of the Black Mirror universe, with the convoluted twists and underlying social message. Even if you’ve already watched every Black Mirror episode, why not rewatch your favorites?

Love the games of Squid Game? There’s more where that came from. Check out Alice in Borderland, which follows an aimless gamer and his two pals as they suddenly find themselves in a hollowed-out version of Tokyo. In order to survive in this wasteland, they’ll need to compete in dangerous games. Sound familiar? That’s a whole lot like the premise of Squid Game, too.
