‘The Tender Bar’: Get Your First Look at George Clooney’s Coming-of-Age Drama Starring Ben Affleck

George Clooney and Ben Affleck teaming up? Yes, please. Amazon Prime Video has announced the release date of their upcoming A-List film The Tender Bar, set to hit theaters this December and streaming in January. Along with announcing the release date for the upcoming coming-of-age drama, Amazon also tweeted a first look image for the movie.

“Deep talks over beer?” the streamer shared, along with a first image. “Count us in.” Well, it’s the first day of fall, so count us in too! That sounds like a warm way to welcome in colder days.

Affleck is set to star in the film alongside folks like Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Lily Rabe (The Undoing), and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future). Clooney will direct the film, with William Monahan (The DepartedThe Gambler) penning the script.

The Tender Bar marks Clooney’s first film following Netflix sci-fi The Midnight Sky. The movie is an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner J.R. Moehringer’s bestselling memoir of the same name. The book tells the story of J.R. (Sheridan), a young boy growing up in Long Island who seeks out father figures among the patrons of his uncle Charlie’s (Affleck) bar. His mother (Rabe) struggles to provide for her son, attempting to leave the rundown home of her own father (Lloyd), so J.R. begins to pursue his own dreams.

Along with the main stars, the film’s ensemble also includes Max Casella, Sondra James, Max Martini, Michael Braun, Matthew Delamater, Rhenzy Feliz, Ivan Leung, Briana Middleton and Daniel Ranieri. Clooney and Grant Heslov produced the film through their company, Smokehouse Pictures, alongside Ted Hope, with Moehringer and Barbara A. Hall serving as executive producers.

The Tender Bar will release in theaters for a limited release on Dec. 17, opening nationwide on Dec. 22. The film will be available globally for streaming via Prime Video on Jan. 7.
