Here’s Why Kaitlyn Dever Is Wearing a Bag Clip in Her Hair on ‘The Premise’

Breaking Kaitlyn Dever news: the actress wears a bag clip in her hair on today’s episode of The Premise, and it’s easily one of the weirdest, funniest visuals of the year. And, as it turns out, it was also the choice that series creator BJ Novak made himself.

“That was my call and one of the things I’m proudest of, that Kaitlyn wears a bag clip in her hair,” Novak told Decider as part of the show’s Television Critics Association (TCA) panel.

In the episode, Dever stars as Abbi, a disenfranchised student at a school presented with a very weird challenge: when music superstar Jesse Wheeler (Lucas Hedges) returns to his alma mater, he offers to give the school’s valedictorian backstage passes to his concert, a personal tour of his house, and in a last second addition, he notes, “if you want, I’ll fuck you.”

Spoilers past this point, but for Wheeler, this sends him off on a very mild journey of self-discovery, as he tries to interrogate why he said what he said, without — ultimately — much insight on his own part (for what it’s worth, he does talk to God, who is mostly interested in giving him investment advice). For Abbi, it sends her on a very different path. The hyper-intelligent student has barely attended school, but thanks to a series of circumstances involving shutting down a few teachers (and fellow students), as well as blowing the late, great Ed Asner’s mind at a school fair, she ends up as valedictorian, and winning the contest. And as she reveals in the final moments, yes, she fucked Jesse Wheeler.

But anyway, back to the bag clip.

“Megg Massey, our amazing hair person, chose the color with me,” Novak continued, “but thank you, because we wanted to show that she was someone who was so checked out of school that she would just be so careless with getting ready for school.”

It definitely conveys that, and as an additional choice, as Dever gets more invested in school, she ditches the bag clip, and even dresses up slightly for her night with Wheeler. But even with Abbi’s reveal as the stinger, nothing is funnier than a half-asleep Kaitlyn Dever stumbling around with a bag clip in her hair. More of that, please.
