If you’ve started watching Midnight Mass, there’s a good chance all those familiar faces are making you think of another Netflix original. That’s because Midnight Mass shares a lot of DNA with two other Mike Flanagan shows, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Mike Flanagan has always been a distinctive creator with a loyal stable of actors. As such, a lot of his movies and shows star the same actors and hit similar emotional notes. But with The Haunting and Midnight Mass, the similarities feel more visible than ever. Wondering how these two series are related? Here’s everything you need to know.

Is Midnight Mass Connected to The Haunting Series?

Though you may recognize the same actors in both shows, it is not. Though The Haunting series may feel a bit random, it follows a specific format. Each season questions what a ghost is while it adapts classic gothic novels into chilling seasons of television. The first season was based on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, which is where the anthology series gets its name. Season 2 was based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw.

Conversely, Midnight Mass is a wholly original series from Mike Flanagan. In a letter to the press, Flanagan revealed that this seven-episode series was a story that he’s always wanted to tell and that it comes from a “personal place.” “One of the things that defines The Haunting anthology for me is that both of them so far are about updating and riffing on existing classic literature,” Flanagan told EW.Midnight Mass was always so original and important and personal, it just never felt like it was ever going to be a part of that universe.”

As we’ve covered before, there’s a slim chance that this new limited series may get another season as either an anthology series or as a straight drama. It’s happened before with Big Little Lies. But it’s very unlikely.

Which The Haunting Actors Appear in Midnight Mass?

Just because Midnight Mass isn’t a season of The Haunting, that doesn’t mean these two projects aren’t similar. Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, Alex Essoe, Annabeth Gish, Robert Longstreet, and Samantha Sloyan have all starred in Seasons 1 and 2 of The Haunting series, and they’re all back for Midnight Mass. This new series also stars Annarah Cymone as Leeza, who’s set to star in Flanagan’s upcoming The Midnight Club. The mystery-horror thriller is based on the book of the same name by Christopher Pike about a group of terminally ill patients who vow to contact each other from beyond the grave. This upcoming project will also star Igby Rigney, Zach Gilford, and Samantha Sloyan, who star in Midnight Mass.

Will There Be a Season 3 of The Haunting?

There are currently no plans for a third season of The Haunting. But if the right story comes along and the timing is right, Mike Flanagan is open to another season. “It would have to be with the right piece of IP, it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House,” Flanagan told EW. So, yes, another season is possible. But don’t hold your breath.
