New Movies On Demand: ‘The Protégé,’ ‘Night Of The Animated Dead,’ + More

Hollywood really loves a layered, complicated, charming assassin. (I mean, don’t we all?) In this week’s new movies on VOD, Maggie Q stars in The Protégé, where she is, you guessed it, a layered, complicated, and charming assassin, and she’s out to avenge the death of her mentor. And speaking of death, or rather, undeath, the newly released Night Of The Animated Dead combines the classic zombie tale Night Of The Living Dead with computer animation for a completely unique viewing experience.

And for something not death-related at all, This Is The Night is a film that is, to put it plainly, about one boys love for Rocky III. It’s a period piece (the period being 1982) set in Staten Island, on the eve of the release of Rocky III, which stars Lucius Hoyos as an Italian-American kid named Anthony (duh) who wants nothing more than to watch the movie with his friends and then hang out with the girl he has a crush on. Frank Grillo and Naomi Watts star as Anthony’s parents, and Bobby Cannavale chews up some scenery as a local mobster, and the whole thing is a charming, and very regionally-specific homage to growing up in a time when going to the movies actually meant something, dammit.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The Protégé

In The Protégé, Maggie Q plays Anna, a woman who was raised by Moody (Samuel L. Jackson), an assassin who taught her everything she knows. When he’s killed, she avenges his death and – twist! – ends up romantically involved with one of the men she’s trying find (that man is Michael Keaton).

The plot of The Protégé reads like it’s the love child of The Professional and John Wick, it’s got stunts galore, some serious shootouts, and most of it is performed by the film’s star, Maggie Q. The actress performed her own death-defying stunts in the movie despite just having had spine surgery in real life. It’s like that famous line about Ginger Rogers doing everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in heels, but add to that “while also recovering from major surgery,” and you’ll be even more impressed by Q’s physical feats.

Night Of The Animated Dead

There have been plenty of riffs on (and sequels to) the original zombie horror film Night Of The Living Dead, but none quite like Night Of The Animated Dead. In this new version, the original George Romero film was animated in a near shot-for-shot recreation, and it features the voice talents of Josh Duhamel, Dulé Hill, Katee Sackhoff, and Katharine Isabelle, among others. As we gear up for the Halloween season, get your scares in early with the animated reanimation tale.
