‘The Starling’ Netflix Movie Soundtrack List

Netflix‘s The Starling strikes a delicate balance between comedy and drama, and its soundtrack full of indie folk and R&B tunes helps set the mood. Curious about all the songs used in the Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd-led movie? Lets break them down.

Directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Matt Harris, The Starling centers on married couple Lilly and Jack (McCarthy and O’Dowd) who are struggling to move forward following the death of their child. As Jack recuperates in a mental health facility, Lilly finds solace in her gardening. The film’s eponymous bird begins attacking her in the process, but plays an unexpectedly important role in her journey toward healing.

When it came to finding music for The Starling, the film had the help of a seasoned pro: Music supervisor Julia Michels, who previously worked on films like Pitch Perfect, The Greatest Showman, and 2018’s A Star Is Born.

“I’d say I probably listened to 1,000 songs minimum on this film, because we’ve got several key spots,” she said as part of a Netflix press release. “Like Melissa sitting on the porch listening to music and several montages. When I’m looking for something super emotional that has to hit a bunch of beats, I actually [watch footage with the song playing] before I decide.”
