‘The View’ Audiences Go Wild Over COVID Chaos: “That Was Pretty Cringeworthy”

“There’s never a dull moment working in television.”

You can say that again, Joy Behar! On today’s episode of The View, chaos reigned as co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro tested positive for breakthrough cases of COVID while the show was being broadcast live. With no backup plan, Behar took the reigns and began prompting the audience members for questions. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was slated for an exclusive in-person interview with the panel, was still waiting in the wings.

While the events in the studio spiraled out of control, online, The View audiences were pretty confused. After the show’s first commercial break, a producer chimed in from off-stage, telling Navarro and Hostin that they had to leave immediately without revealing a reason why. Folks called the blunder “cringeworthy,” at first: “Seriously they need to get their shit together bc we just came back from a commercial break,” one user wrote on Twitter.

But after Behar second commercial break, she finally explained the situation: “Since this is going to be a major news story any minute now, what happened is that Sunny and Ana both apparently tested positive for COVID,” Behar explained. “No matter how hard we try, these things happen. They probably had a breakthrough case. They’ll be okay, I’m sure, because they’re both vaccinated up the wazoo!”

The show must go on! Behar’s announcement meant further delays in Harris’ interview, which later moved to a digital conversation for her safety. With no more hot topics and just one co-host by her side, Behar decided to take a new route: ask the audience for questions. Folks online were absolutely taken by this wild turn of events.

“The irony of them just talking in Hot Topics about COVID & vaccines & then finding out they tested positive on live TV is really insane!” one user tweeted.

On the other hand, others were a bit upset that Harris’ interview had to be cut short due to the COVID madness. “I Hate that @sunny wasn’t able to ask her question regarding Haiti to @vp,” one user lamented.

The View airs weekdays on ABC at 11/10c.
