‘Tiger King 2’ Netflix Premiere Date Announced

Wondering when you can check back in with your early quarantine faves Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin and the rest? Good news, as thanks to Netflix’s virtual event TUDUM, we now know Tiger King 2 will premiere on November 17, 2021.

First released in March, 2020, Tiger King arguably hit at the perfect time. With the pandemic beginning in earnest, and millions trapped inside their houses, the engrossing true crime docuseries turned into an obsession, thanks to outrageous real life characters like Exotic’s currently jailed tiger owner, and Carole Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue.

According to Netflix, the show “attracted 64 million households in the first four weeks after its March 2020 premiere,” and clearly dominated social media with memes and discussions for weeks afterwards. It also set off a firestorm of copycats, including a TMZ special and several in development scripted limited series, including one with Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin, a recently shelved project starring Nicolas Cage as Joe Exotic, and discussions with super-producer Ryan Murphy.

Short version? It was a no-brainer to expect that Netflix would bring Tiger King back for more, even with the large majority of viewers realizing they may have been so focused on the series not due to quality, but due to Quarantine Madness ™. The new season of the series will be once again directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, and presumably will follow events after the end of the first series, with Exotic in jail.

One person who won’t be into the idea of Tiger King 2? Baskin, who recently slammed the project in an interview with Variety. “I wouldn’t call Eric Goode or Rebecca Chaiklin true documentarians,” Baskin said. “I mean that was just a reality show dumpster fire.”

It’s arguable that’s why people watched it, of course, but we’ll have to stay tuned to see whether the second series deals with the lurid footage from the first, as well as the fallout from the release of the series; or if its just as pulpy and over-the-top. Considering Netflix has teased the premiere date reveal with “find out when the series returns for a second dose of mayhem and madness,” one might tend to think it’ll be the latter.
