Few shows embrace their setting like Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass. In the first few episodes of the Netflix limited series, the tiny island of Crockett Island feels borderline claustrophobic. Yet as the series progresses, that evolves, transforming the discomforts of a small town into a true community that’s willing to pay the steepest price imaginable.

It’s a quiet evolution that makes you want to explore Crockett Island for yourself. So can you? Here’s everything you need to know about where Midnight Mass was filmed and if you can visit it during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Is Crockett Island Real?

Considering the fate of Crockett Island, we don’t know if this is good or bad news. But no, Crockett Island as it appears in Midnight Mass is not real. The Crockett Cove Woods do exist in Maine, but from what we can tell they have no connection to the angel infested community from Netflix’s latest and spookiest original series.

Where Is Midnight Mass Supposed to Take Place? Where Is Crockett island Supposed to Be?

It’s hard to tell exactly where Crockett Island is supposed to be. But based on the accents used in the show and the prevalent sweaters and long-sleeved shirts, it seems as though the series is supposed to take place on an island around Northeast America. Think Nantucket in Massachusetts or Star Island off of New Hampshire but without the tourism.

Where Was Midnight Mass Filmed?

The actual filming location of this season comes straight from the horse’s mouth. In this case, the horse was Midnight Mass‘ creator, Mike Flanagan. In December of 2020, Flanagan revealed that production had wrapped and that the series had been filmed in Garry Point Park in Richmond, British Columbia.

Filming Midnight Mass was a unique experience for everyone involved. The cast and crew started production in December of 2019 and had to abandon the sets due to COVID. They spent months hoping that their sets, which were left to the mercy of the elements, would remain standing and that they could one day return to filming. Adding to the production drama, Midnight Mass was one of the first shows to resume production, forcing everyone to figure out best procedures on the fly for this never-before-experienced global catastrophe. Those silent prayers paid off. During its 83-day shoot, production never shut down, which was borderline unheard of in 2020.

Where Is Crockett Island? Can You Visit Midnight Mass‘s Filming Location Right Now?

So can you visit not-Crockett Island in real life? Absolutely. The Canadian Garry Point Park is located on the southwest tip of Richmond and is close to the historic Steveston Village. The park includes a Kuno garden, a Japanese-inspired memorial garden, Scotch Pond, the Fisherman’s Memorial Needle, and expansive open areas. As of September 27, the park and its designated BBQ area are both open. If you do visit, make sure you have proof of vaccination, which is required for certain activities in accordance with Provincial Health Orders. Enjoy the beautiful sunset, and be on the lookout for any “angels.”
