‘The Great British Baking Show’: I Love Noel Fielding’s Ponytail

Ever since Noel Fielding first arrived in The Great British Baking Show tent, he has been wowing us with his fabulous fashion choices. He’s given us high heeled boots, spooky sweaters, and Dan Flashes-esque button downs. However nothing could have prepared me for what Fielding served up this week on The Great British Baking Show on Netflix.

Noel Fielding pulled his hair back into a ponytail!

Yes, a ponytail! A ponytail like the tail on a horse. A ponytail like the hairstyle that pulls hair of various lengths back with a rubber bad. A ponytail like how I wear my hair when I’m grunting through an online spin class at home. Noel Fielding did that! The British comic and Great British Baking Show host actually pulled his famous raven black hair away from his face for once! And I’m just going to say it: I like Noel Fielding’s ponytail. And he should mix it up more often.

Ever since Noel Fielding burst onto the British comedy scene with The Mighty Boosh, he’s been known for his eccentric wardrobe and commitment to glam rock hair. Fielding’s fashion is a simply a huge part of his persona. So much so he’s sort of stuck to the same iconic look for a while: long hair with long bangs and long sideburns paired with dark pants and a wildly colorful top. For years, you could tune into The Great British Baking Show and find yourself marveling over what kooky costume Fielding had chosen for the tent that week. But it’s always been the shirt that Fielding has had fun with. This week, though, he actually went deeper and debuted a ponytail.

Believe it or not, but this is not the first time this year Fielding has experimented with the risky maneuver of gathering all his hair into an elastic band. A quick look at Instagram reveals he tried it out in February. Clearly he was enchanted by it enough to debut the coif on The Great British Baking Show.

Personally, I really like Noel with his hair pulled back. He looks simultaneously both chic and comfortable. The judges mentioned repeatedly that it was warm in the tents this week, ergo it makes sense Fielding would want his hair off his face and neck. It also shows signs of evolution in the comedian. The last 18 months have irrevocably changed us all. If, for Noel Fielding, that means he’s more open to hair ties, then that’s honestly the gentlest change possible.

Noel’s ponytail was definitely jarring at first, but it quickly grew on me. It’s different. It’s stylish. Most of all, it’s Noel Fielding’s hair. He can do whatever he wants with it.

Go Noel’s ponytail, go!
