‘Old’ Ending Explained: M. Night Shyamalan’s Thriller Will Make Your Head Spin

Get ready to feel old! No, seriously, because M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is one of our picks in this week’s new movies on VOD. In addition to the rapidly-aging-on-a-beach thriller, we’re also excited for The Night House, starring Rebecca Hall and Barry star Sarah Goldberg. Hall plays a woman terrorized by visions of her dead husband while she lives in the house he built for her and must figure out why the spirit that she believes to be her husband is still haunting her.

And now that Ted Lasso is coming to an end, you can still get your fill of Jason Sudeikis thanks to his starring role in South of Heaven, a thriller that co-stars Evangeline Lilly, She Whigham, and Mike Colter. This film is a dark, dramatic turn for Sudeikis, in it, he plays Jimmy, a felon who has recently been released from prison and only wants to spend time with his childhood sweetheart Annie (Lilly), who is dying of cancer. Though Jimmy just wants live an honest life and make Annie’s final months the best she’s ever had, but he gets tangled up with the wrong people once again, and he and Annie get sucked into a dangerous life of crime again.

Old

While much of the world was cooped up in their homes, unable to travel for the past two years or so, M. Night Shyamalan was busy making a film that would curb any wanderlust we might have. In Old, Gael Garcia Bernal and Vicky Krieps are a married couple who bring their two kids on a luxe beach vacation. (“Can’t believe I found this online!” she tells him, famous last words that can be applied to so many situations.) The beach is hiding many secrets though, mainly that it causes anyone who visits it to age so quickly that they basically live their whole lives in the course of the day and end up dying there. As with all Shyamalan films, of course there’s a twist, the twist here being that there is a rapper who is actually named “Mid-Sized Sedan” sharing the beach with the family.

The Night House

If having beaches ruined for you wasn’t enough, The Night House will ruin houses for you too. Rebecca Hall plays Beth, a woman who is living alone in the house that her dead husband Owen built for her. She has many questions about why he killed himself, and as she digs through his belongings, she begins to have terrifying visions and discovers that her husband built a second house that’s the complete reverse of her own house, and which holds some spooky secrets of its own.
