HBO Max Picks Up ‘Pennyworth’ For Season 3

Some great news for me, personally, a guy who loves watching comic book based shows but so far has been unable to muster the energy to watch Pennyworth on EPIX: as just announced at DC FanDome, HBO Max has picked up the adventures of Batman’s butler as a Max Original for Season 3. And not only that, the first two seasons of the prequel series will stream on HBO Max starting in early 2022.

Set years before Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) was butling for the moodiest billionaire to ever dress up as a giant bat, Pennyworth focuses on Alfred’s adventures in the swinging ’60s. Per Warner Bros’ logline, Alfred is, “a former British SAS soldier, who forms a security company in 1960s London and goes to work with young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), before he becomes Bruce Wayne’s father. Season three of the psychological thriller also stars Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater and Simon Manyonda. Season three begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains.”

If “Batman” and “prequel” perked up the little ears that stick out of your cowl, and you thought, “hey, wasn’t there a show on FOX called Gotham that already did that?” Well, you’d be correct. And in fact, both Gotham and Pennyworth share some of the same creative staff, albeit the latter is set decades before the former.

In a big twist in the Season 2 finale, after a season of Martha (Paetz) being pregnant and then marrying Thomas, she gave birth to not a little boy named Bruce, but a baby girl. So what does that mean for the future of Batman? Does Bruce Wayne have an older sister? Will she also dress as a bat? Or will she go into butling? And is butling a real word? We’ll have to find out when Pennyworth Season 3 premieres on HBO Max in 2022.
