Sadly, the surprise Netflix project that David Fincher announced last week wasn’t Mindhunter Season 3. But according to director Asif Kapadia, who helmed two episodes of Season 1, fan fervor could actually bring the drama about FBI serial killer profilers back.

“Audiences around the world need let @netflix know that there is a real interest & demand for Season 3 of @MINDHUNTER_ if you make enough noise, It might actually happen…. #DavidFincher #mindhunter,” Kapadia recently tweeted.

That said, last year executive producer Fincher told Vulture that Season 3 of the acclaimed Netflix series wasn’t likely. “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show,” he said. “We talked about ‘Finish [the 2020 film] Mank and then see how you feel, but I honestlty don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

Fincher added that making the show was “a lot” for him, especially since he had to step in and run the show week-to-week when Season 1 had no showrunner.

So who to listen to: Fincher, or Kapadia? You decide!

Mindhunter is based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, which traces the beginnings of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. The series starred Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv. Besides Kapadia, other directors included Tobias Lindholm, Andrew Dominik, and Carl Franklin.

Fincher’s next film, The Killer, is scheduled to begin production next month. His latest Netflix project is the upcoming docuseries Voir, which is comprised of several cinema essays.
