‘Riverdale’ Season 6 Trailer Teases Long-Awaited ‘Sabrina’ Crossover, Surprise Pregnancy Reveal

Riverdale has never been afraid of twists and turns, and judging from the Season 6 trailer that The CW shared today, the show may be gearing up for its wildest installment yet.

The new preview teases a “five-episode event” premiering Nov. 16, and it’s… a lot. We open on Archie (KJ Apa) investigating a field of creepy rag dolls in the woods, and immediately blaming Cheryl (Madeleine Petsch), who became convinced she was a witchy saint meant to enact the Blossom family’s vengeful curse at the end of Season 5. Judging by the Midsommar-like cult she’s seen leading in the new footage, Cheryl is living up to that promise.

Elsewhere, Veronica (Camila Mendes) and her boyfriend Reggie (Charles Melton) take on a guy who claims to literally be the devil, and Archie and Lili Reinhart’s Betty (aka “Barchie”) contemplate their future. “There’s nothing I want more than to have your baby,” Betty tells Archie while straddling him in the trailer. When we last saw these two, a bomb exploded under Archie’s bed right after they decided to become a full-fledged couple. Either they emerged from the attack miraculously unscathed, or Riverdale is toying with alternate realities.

Speaking of alternate realities, the trailer ends by teasing Kiernan Shipka’s introduction as witchy Greendale resident Sabrina Spellman, who you’ll of course remember from the Netflix original series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It seems like Riverdale is doubling down on Cheryl’s witchy powers next season, although whether or not the show will finally embrace the supernatural is anyone’s guess.

“We’ve been talking about having Sabrina visit Riverdale since Season One, so it’s thrilling that this is finally happening, as part of our ‘Rivervale’ special event,” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement announcing Shipka’s appearance. “It’s also perfect that she shows up to help Cheryl Blossom during her hour of greatest need. Everyone on set lost their minds — I think fans will, too. It’s really fun and special.”

Cults, witches, surprise pregnancies, and the devil — what else did you expect? This is Riverdale we’re talking about here.

Riverdale returns to The CW starting Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 9/8c.
