‘The View’: Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg Lament Being Played by Men on ‘SNL’

When it comes to Saturday Night Live parodying The View, hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg have some notes. On today’s episode of The View, Behar and Goldberg lamented often being played by men on the iconic NBC sketch show, and reflected on how it has taken aim at their show over the years.

After discussing the day’s hot topics, the panel took a moment to announce that a new episode of The View‘s official podcast, Behind the Table, is out now. In a clip from the podcast, Behar interviewed original series host Debbie Matenopoulos about joining The View at just 22 years old, and the experience of being parodied on SNL.

SNL has been after us from the get-go. They’re a little rough on the young ones,” Behar said. “Did it bother you when they did that?”

Matenopoulos said that while she was shocked the few times, she was ultimately “honored” to be referenced on the show at all. “Two months earlier, no one knew who I was,” she pointed out. “And [now] Cameron Diaz was playing me, and Reese Witherspoon, and Claire Danes.”

“At least you had women doing you,” Behar replied at the end of the clip. “I had a man doing me.”

Back in the studio, Behar and Goldberg joked about regularly being played by men over decades of SNL parodies. “They didn’t have a lot of women in those days to do it, I guess that was it,” Behar added.

Behar was initially portrayed by Ana Gasteyer in the late 1990s, but comedian Fred Armisen is best-remembered for playing her over the years — particularly for his delivery of the line, “So what, who cares?” Armisen even appeared on The View while in-character as Behar during a 2019 episode.

More recently, the media personality has been portrayed by SNL cast member Kate McKinnon. After the NBC series parodied Behar and former co-host Meghan McCain’s frequent fights in an April 2019 episode, Behar tweeted: “Finally, an actual female is playing me. Thank you Kate.”

The View airs weekdays on ABC at 11/10c. Scroll up to watch a clip from today’s episode.
