‘Sanditon’ Season 2 to Premiere in March 2022: Get Your First Look

Better find a chaise you can swoon on, because Sanditon Season 2 has an official premiere date. The long-awaited return of Sanditon will premiere on Masterpiece on PBS on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT. PBS also revealed a series of first look photos showing our girl Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) returning to the seaside resort of Sanditon with friends like Georgiana Lamb (Crystal Clarke) and the Parker family (sans Theo James‘s Sidney). However all is not heartache as one of the preview pics shows a very happy Charlotte dancing at a ball with a dashing redcoat…

Sanditon is based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel about a young woman who journeys to an up-and-coming seaside resort town in the 1810s. Although Austen passed away before completing the story, it teased some exciting new themes for the author, as the story focused not on landed gentry, but a family of entrepreneurs. Furthermore, Georgiana Lambe was to be the author’s first major character of color. Andrew Davies took these elements from Austen’s work and made a decidedly modern and uniquely racy series that soon captivated a hyper-loyal army of fans.

Sanditon Season 2 will follow heroine Charlotte Heywood after the heartbreak of Season 1 and introduce new love interests for the character including Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes), called “a mysterious resident with a complex family history” and Colonel Francis Lennox (Tom Weston-Jones), a “self-assured war hero.”

Other new additions to the cast include Rosie Graham as Charlotte’s sister Alison, Maxim Ays as Alison’s love interest Captain William Carter, Frank Blake as Captain Declan Fraser, and Alexander Vlahos as Byronic painter Charles Lockhart.

PBS revealed five new images from Sanditon Season 2 along with the premiere date news, so lets see what we can glean from our first look at the new season…

Perhaps the most tantalizing image of the bunch shows Charlotte enjoying herself at a ball with a dashing redcoat. We’re assuming the lad in question is Colonel Francis Lennox, the war hero who is set to make a play for Miss Heywood’s heart. That said, as students of Austen, we can’t help but feel that Alexander Colbourne (who sounds rather brooding) shouldn’t be discounted in this burgeoning love triangle!

This photo gives us our first look at Charlotte’s sister Alison as she arrives in Sanditon. Also of note? The Parker family is once again chaperoning Charlotte (and now her sister) about. It seems that despite the way Sidney botched things with Charlotte, his brothers and sister-in-law are still Team Heywood.

In this image, Charlotte is having a picnic with an unidentified woman. Based on what Masterpiece has revealed about the new season, she could be tied to the Denham family’s new secrets or be associated with Charles Lockhart. (This is all conjecture based on how she reminds me of late Romantic era muses like Mary Shelley or Claire Clairmont.)

Here we see Charlotte reunited with friend Georgiana Lambe. Georgiana has a fraught relationship with Sidney Parker, as he is supposed to look after the heiress’s estates and best interests. What do you want to bet the besties are gossiping about the state of Sidney in this early first look? (Also: Georgiana’s outfit is stunning!)

Finally, this wistfully romantic shot seems to be Charlotte in the same outfit as the picture with Georgiana. She’s returning to one of Sanditon’s many gorgeous cliffs. Mayhaps reminiscing on some hot makeout sessions that happened there?

We’ll have plenty of time to squee and speculate about all things Sanditon Season 2 before the series returns in Spring 2022.
