Jensen Ackles Discussed Gun Preparation on ‘Rust’ Set Days Before Fatal Shooting Accident

Days before the Oct. 21 shooting accident on set of the upcoming film Rust resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, actor Jensen Ackles discussed preparing to use firearms in the movie while appearing at a Supernatural fan convention.

“I’ve got a 6 a.m. call tomorrow to have a big shootout. They had me pick my gun, they were like, ‘Alright, what gun would you like?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know?’ and the armorer was like, ‘Do you have gun experience?'” he said in a fan-captured video from the Denver event (which took place from Oct. 15-17).

Ackles continued: “I was like, ‘A little.’ And she’s like, ‘Okay, well, this is how you load it, this is how we check it and make sure it’s safe.'”

He said the on-set armorer told him she was “going to put some blanks” into the gun, and instructed him to “fire off a couple rounds” in preparation.

According to IATSE Local 44, which covers prop masters, the gun used in the scene of Hutchins’ death by Alec Baldwin contained a “live round.” The production also clarified that the production propmaster on the set of Rust was not a member of Local 44.

The fatal incident took place on Oct. 21. While filming for the upcoming western movie, Baldwin reportedly discharged a prop gun, which killed Hutchins and injured the film’s director, Joel Souza. At the time of publication, the incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Baldwin responded to the incident in a tweet on Friday morning, expressing his “shock and sadness” and confirming that he was “fully cooperating with the police investigation.”

A statement from the sheriff’s department read, “The sheriff’s office confirms taht two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor… Ms. Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to University of New MExico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
