Locke & Key Season 2 is officially streaming on Netflix, which means A) you’ve probably already binged it, and B) are dying to watch the next season, given that cliffhanger ending. But is there going to be a Locke & Key Season 3? And if so, when will Locke & Key Season 3 premiere?

Great questions, and good on you for clicking on a post titled “when will Locke & Key Season 3 premiere?” to find out the answers. That’s the sort of smart thinking that’s going to pay dividends down the road.

Anyway, on with the actual info.

Will there be a Locke & Key Season 3?

As sure as Gabe (Griffin Gluck) and Eden (Hallea Jones) are evil demons, there’s gonna be a Locke & Key Season 3 on Netflix. The streamer announced the series had been picked up for Season 3 before Season 2 even debuted, and the two seasons were essentially filmed back to back with a short break. Great news, particularly given how Season 2 ends

When will Locke & Key Season 3 premiere on Netflix?

This, we’re less sure about. No official premiere date has been announced yet, though looking at the past patterns of production to release date, we can certainly speculate. Locke & Key Season 1 finished filming in Toronto on July 5, 2019, and the first season was released on February 7, 2020, about seven months later. Season 2 finished filming on April 16, 2021 and was released today, October 22. That’s a six month gap, fyi. With Season 3 finishing principal photography around September 17, a six or seven month gap would put Locke & Key Season 3 premiering in March, or April 2022 at the latest.

Will Netflix want to put a longer gap between Season 2 and Season 3? Maybe, maybe not. This isn’t exactly the same thing as the streamer’s “Part 1” and “Part 2” format of split seasons that often sees two parts of the same season debut in the same year (see Money Heist as an example); it’s two different seasons. So it’s possible Season 3 could debut even later, either in the Summer, or even as late as October, 2022.

But fingers crossed it’s sooner, because we need to head back to Matheson ASAP.

What will happen in Locke & Key Season 3, based on the books?

Uhhh… No idea. The absolutely wild thing about Seasons 1 and 2 is that they essentially flew through nearly the entire plot of all six graphic novel collections by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. There is a lot of other material that will be collected next year in a collection called The Golden Age, but those take place earlier in the history of Keyhouse, and don’t include (mostly) the same characters. There are also a few issues and events here and there in the first six volumes that haven’t been touched on.

There’s also a storyline Hill and Rodriguez have been teasing for a long time (and are tentatively planning on starting work on next year) called World War Key, that should bring back some of the modern Lockes. So could Season 3 be based on unpublished Locke & Key material, a la the final seasons of Game of Thrones? When Decider asked co-showrunner Meredith Averill specifically about this, she explained that Locke & Key season 3 is pulling on none of what was just mentioned.

“It’s entirely original,” Averill explained, without elaborating further.

We’re essentially in uncharted waters when it comes to Locke & Key Season 3. That’s exciting and nerve-wracking!

Who is in the cast of Locke & Key Season 3?

Without getting too heavily into spoilers, the whole main cast should be back for Season 3, including Darby Stanchfield as Nina Locke, Emilia Jones as Kinsey Locke, Jackson Robert Scott as Bode Locke, and — spoilers past this point — Connor Jessup as Tyler Locke, despite him leaving town at the end of Season 2. As Jessup explained to Decider, “I don’t think when he leaves at the end of Season 2 that his story is over. To me, it felt like a new chapter, but it didn’t feel like a resolution. So, there’s still more for Tyler.”

There’s also a good chance we’ll see supporting cast members like Petrice Jones as Scot Cavendish (who also left town), Aaron Ashmore as Duncan Locke, Asha Bromfield as Zadie and Jesse Camacho as Doug. And (again, serious spoilers) Lucas Caravaggio (Felix Mallard) is “alive” again at the end of the season, albeit as an echo. Also you can expect Kevin Durand to be the main villain, as Captain Frederick Gideon; and it’s possible despite dying in a well, Hallea Jones and Griffin Gluck might be back in some form as Eden and Gabe. When asked, Averill once again simply said, “stay tuned.”

Gluck, meanwhile, was cagey, but more effusive. “I’ll give you one of these,” Gluck said, waggling his eyebrows. “So look, this is going to be hard to transcribe, but maybe… There’s always a chance. We’ve got magic, and movie magic.”

Jones was of the same mind, adding that, “We’ll see. Dot, dot, dot. Yeah.”

So not a confirmation, but not a denial. Hey, Gideon is going to need henchmen, right?

Will there be a Locke & Key Season 4?

Whoa, nelly! Given Season 2 just debuted, and Season 3 is many months away, we don’t have any specific idea about a Season 4, or if Season 3 will be the final season a la other Netflix sci-fi/fantasy shows like Lost in Space. We’ll just have to keep it… Locked… Right here for any news.
