‘The View’ Tears Into “Ghouls” Criticizing Alec Baldwin for Prop Gun Accident

During the first hot topic of today’s The View, the panelists discussed the prop gun tragedy that occurred on set of the film Rust this past weekend. As the hosts unpacked the tragedy, Whoopi Goldberg shared her experiences with guns on set, advocating for more safety measures to keep cast and crew safe. Taking it a step further, Sunny Hostin tore into folks maligning Alec Baldwin for the shooting, slamming them for ridiculing the actor after the accident.

The incident unfolded this weekend after actor/producer Baldwin fired a gun containing live ammunition, injuring director Joel Souza and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin has since stated that he is “fully cooperating” with authorities to address how the shooting occurred. It’s also been revealed that the crew on Rust walked out days before the shooting, protesting unsafe working conditions after three accidental gun discharges had occurred. On The View, Goldberg walked her co-hosts through on-set safety.

“At least when I was doing it, you had a person whose job it was. That was their job — only that. They check the weapon, they would bring it to you and show you that it was empty,” Goldberg explained. “You don’t use bullets on a set, because they kill people.”

Hostin then chimed in to share her opinion on the matter, tearing into folks blaming Baldwin for the accident.

“You know what I think is terrible?” Hostin began, speaking to Goldberg. “I’m sure you know Alec pretty well, I’ve met him a few times. I’m sure he is distraught over this. It’s been reported that he’s inconsolable. It certainly wasn’t intentional. There were all these ghouls that came out over the weekend attacking him like Lauren Boebert, and of course, Donald Trump Jr. A few people saying terrible things about him during this time.”

Since the accident, the former president’s son has gone on to sell t-shirts mocking Baldwin and retweet an array of statements made against the actor. Boebert, a representative for Colorado, also shamed Baldwin in a tweet that was later denounced by Donald Trump’s ex-comms director (and The View guest host) Alyssa Farah.

“A woman died. A woman who is a mother, a wife, someone who they say was just wonderful at her craft, a cinematographer just starting. When you have people like that coming out, trying to take some opportunity, a shot at Alec Baldwin? I thought that was disgusting and despicable.”
