‘Dune: Part 2’ Officially Greenlit By Warner Bros.

In the words of Zendaya‘s Chani, “This is only the beginning.” Today, Warner Bros. has officially greenlit Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part 2, meaning even more spice, sandworms, and space messiahs are headed your way.

The news was announced via Legendary and WB social accounts. “Denis Villeneuve has craft a film that is both visually extraordinary and emotionally transporting, as evidenced by its global success both critically and at the box office,” Toby Emmerich, Chairman of Warner Bros. Picture Group, said a statement. “We are thrilled to continue on this journey with Denis and his cast and crew, and our partners at Legendary, and can’t wait to bring the next chapter of this epic tale to theaters in October 2023.

“It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream,” Villeneuve said in a statement of his own. “This is only the beginning.”

Dune wormed its way to the top of the box office on its opening weekend, earning $40.1 million in North America $221 million worldwide — particularly impressive given that all of Warner Bros.’ theatrical titles have had day-and-date releases on HBO Max. In fact, Villeneuve’s film beat out other blockbusters like The Suicide Squad and Space Jam: A New Legacy to deliver Warner Bros. its biggest opening of 2021. Deadline reports that Dune: Part 2 will be given a pure theatrical window, and no day-and-date HBO Max release plans are in the works.

While the 2021 Dune film adapted roughly the first half of Frank Herbert’s seminal 1965 novel of the same name, Part 2 will bring the rest of the sci-fi epic to the big screen. A prequel spinoff titled Dune: The Sisterhood (which will center on the witchy Bene Gesserit order) is also currently in the works at HBO Max.

As the October 2023 release date confirms, Villeneuve is more than ready to get started.

“I would be very ready to go quite quickly,” he told IGN back in September. “To go quickly in a movie of that size, you still need to make sets, costumes, so we are talking about months. But if ever there’s enthusiasm, I will say that I will be ready to shoot in 2022 for sure.”
