‘Last Night in Soho’ Star Anya Taylor-Joy’s Greatest Horror Hits

Anya Taylor-Joy‘s latest project, Last Night in Soho, takes her away from the chessboards of The Queen’s Gambit and drops her in some scarily familiar territory: a spooky thriller. Yes, before she was Beth Harmon or the latest (and greatest) incarnation of Jane Austen’s Emma, Anya Taylor-Joy was best known as a scream queen. The Argentinian-British actress got her big break starring in Robert Eggers’ The Witch before popping up in every witchy, creepy, scary, and thrilling part casting directors could get her into. Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho capitalizes on Taylor-Joy’s horror chops, casting her as the spirit of a swinging ’60s singer haunting a modern day fashion student (Thomasin McKenzie).

While we have no idea when Last Night in Soho will land on streaming services, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your Anya Taylor-Joy horror fix without leaving the house this weekend. A ton of Taylor-Joy’s eerie early parts are streaming on HBO Max, Prime Video, and more. We’ve taken the liberty of combing through Anya Taylor-Joy’s IMDB profile to pick out her five most Halloween-worthy films and shows. There’s The Witch, obviously, and her final girl turn in Split, but also underhyped projects like Morgan and The Miniaturist.

Here are Last Night in Soho star Anya Taylor-Joy’s five most spooky roles on streaming…

Anya Taylor-Joy’s most iconic role that’s not Beth Harmon? Puritanic teen-turned-devil worshipping witch Thomasin in the cult hit The Witch. Robert Eggers’s psychological horror film follows a family of early American settlers who are cast out of their Puritan community and find themselves struggling to survive in a farm on the edge of a vast wilderness. A missing baby, a black goat, and creepy things all converge to pull Thomasin away from her family and into the thrall of actual witchcraft.

'Morgan' (2016)

Taylor-Joy’s first big splashy role post-The Witch was in the oft-forgotten killer android film, Morgan. Taylor-Joy plays the titular Morgan, a girl with synthetic DNA. A star-studded cast including Kate Mara, Paul Giamatti, Toby Jones, Michelle Yeoh, and Jennifer Jason Leigh takes turns being terrified of Morgan, and with good reason. Taylor-Joy plays her as creepy beyond belief (and talented at chess!). The good news is creepy isn’t Taylor-Joy’s only mode in horror…

'Split' (2016), 'Glass' (2019)

Look, Anya Taylor-Joy isn’t a master of the horror genre simply because she knows how to be creepy. She also knows how to survive the tumult thrown at young heroines in these spine-chilling thrillers. In 2016, she played Casey Cooke, a plucky girl who manages to keep her cool (mostly) when she and friends are kidnapped by James McAvoy’s character afflicted with dangerous multiple personalities. Taylor-Joy was such a hit in the M. Night Shyamalan film, he brought her back for the Split/Unbreakable crossover Glass in 2019.

'The Miniaturist'

The horror genre isn’t limited to magical monsters, scary androids, and jump scares. In 2018, Anya Taylor-Joy starred in the understated and under-appreciated limited series The Miniaturist. Taylor-Joy plays Petronella, a sweet and smart teen who is wed to an aloof merchant in 17th century Holland. Her husband gifts her a dollhouse replica of their stately home which she fills with beautiful miniatures made by a mystery artisan. Things get weird when the dolls come with predictions about the house that soon come true…

'The New Mutants' (2020)

Despite her obvious range, for a hot minute, Anya Taylor-Joy was in danger of being typecast as a witch. After the film festival and streaming success of The Witch, she was tapped to play the iconic Magik in the X-Men franchise film New Mutants. The superhero film was meant to be, you guessed it, a horror riff on the Marvel genre. The scariest thing about The New Mutants, however, is how long it took to come out. When the film eventually made its premiere during the pandemic, Taylor-Joy’s performance emerged as one of the few bright spots in the pulpy flick. (And she is really great!)
