Janet Jackson’s ‘Nipplegate’ Super Bowl Scandal Is Latest Documentary From ‘Framing Britney Spears’ Producers

Now might be a good time for Justin Timberlake to delete his Twitter account. Janet Jackson‘s infamous 2004 wardrobe malfunction will be explored in depth in FX and Hulu‘s upcoming documentary Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson. The film premieres on Friday, Nov. 19 under the platforms’ “The New York Times Presents” banner.

Here’s the official synopsis: “In 2004, a culture war was brewing when the Super Bowl halftime show audience saw a white man expose a Black woman’s breast for 9/16ths of a second. A national furor ensued. ‘If the culture wars could have a 9/11, it’s February 1st, 2004,’ said one observer. The woman was Janet Jackson, and her career was never the same. The man was Justin Timberblake; his stardom only grew. The New York Times examines the racial and cultural currents that collided on the Super Bowl stage, and examines how the incident impacted one of the most successful pop musicians in history.”

Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson will also feature rare footage and interviews with people who were at the forefront of the Houston event, including N.F.L. and MTV executives. With the help of NYT reporting, as well as members of the Jackson family, music industry insiders, and cultural critics, Malfunction is set to dive deep into the cultural event (and “CBS executive Les Moonves’s role in it”).

The film is directed by Jodi Gomes, who also directed The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty and serves as a producer. Executive producers include Ken Druckerman, Banks Tarver, Mary Robertson, Jason Stallman, Sam Dolnick, and Stephanie Preiss.

Gomes’ documentary arrives soon after The New York Times Presents’ September documentary Controlling Britney Spears, a follow-up film to this spring’s Framing Britney Spears. Both focused on the pop star’s conservatorship battle as it grew into a a national news story — and also cast aspersions at Justin Timberlake’s role in Britney’s ultimate distress.

Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson premieres Friday, Nov. 19 at 10 p.m. simultaneously on FX and Hulu.
