‘Stargirl’ Season 2 Finale Ending, Explained

There’s lots to unpack about the Season 2 finale of The CW’s DC’s Stargirl, which found the Justice Society of America (JSA) tangling with Eclipso (Nick Tarabay) for the fate of the world. But just because — spoilers — they managed to beat the baddie, doesn’t mean things are going back to normal in Blue Valley. Nope, there’s another villain headed Courtney Whitmore’s (Brec Bassinger) way, and it means some interesting things for Season 3.

With that in mind, and again, spoilers on, let’s discuss the Stargirl Season 2 finale ending, explained.

What happened in the Stargirl Season 2 finale? Can I get a Stargirl Season 2 finale recap?

Eclipso’s plan was finally revealed: he opened a bunch of portals to a dark dimension called The Shadowlands, and was going to consume every soul on Earth simultaneously. The only thing he needed was to corrupt Courtney, which he did by threatening to twist her dad Pat’s (Luke Wilson) arms off. After screaming, “I hate you,” Eclipso took over Courtney’s body, and using the light of her cosmic staff as well as his own darkness powers, began to open the portals fully.

Only, in a surprise twist, the original Starman, Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale) returned and coached Courtney on remembering her own inner light. With all her friends in attendance, Courtney fought back and expelled Eclipso. Then they did the whole “Loki being confronted by The Avengers” thing and blasted him with a bunch of light until he was beaten (and because the wish-granting Thunderbolt was there, he actually got turned into a piece of burnt toast).

With Eclipso dispatched, it was time for about 12 minutes of wrap-up as we checked in with everyone to set up the new status quo. Sylvester moved in with the Whitmore/Dugan’s, and planned on instructing Courtney how to “really” use the cosmic staff. He also noted that superheroes don’t need school, setting up a clear conflict with his former sidekick Pat (and of note, we still don’t know how Sylvester is alive, after he died in the series premiere).

Meanwhile, Mikey (Trae Romano) and Jakeem (Alkoya Brunson) decided to form their own junior super-team, though Jakeem wasn’t so sure. Former villain Cindy (Meg Delacy) approached Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) about joining up with the JSA, noting that Yolanda got “a pass” for killing someone, so she should, too. Beth (Angelika Washington) discovered that her normally terrible parents were so over the moon about finding out she was a superhero that they’re not only not getting divorced, they’re also going to be all over Beth, 24/7.

Rick (Cameron Gellman), meanwhile, was busy burying the massive Grundy, who died during the fight with Eclipso, when he was approached by the mysterious The Shade (Jonathan Cake). Not only is The Shade not leaving Blue Valley, but he teased that Grundy can be brought back to life if buried in the right place, at the right time.

There’s also Jennie (Ysa Penarejo), aka Green Lantern, who headed off to search for her missing brother, once more. Dr. McNider (Alex Collins) discovered that his wife was alive, and he had a ten year old son (and presumably headed off to find them). Cameron (Hunter Sansone) discovered he had ice powers, thanks to his grandparents. And in a final kicker, Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins), Tigress (Joy Osmanski) and their daughter Artemis Crock (Jade Nguyen), all of whom helped beat Eclipso, moved in next door to the Whitmore/Dugan house. Oh, and they brought muffins.

So that’s it, right? Wrong!

Who is the Stargirl Season 3 villain? Stargirl post-credits scene, explained

After flashing to a title card teasing that Season 3 is subtitled “Frenemies,” clearly tying into the fact that the Crocks, Cindy Burman, and The Shade are all sticking around in Blue Valley, there was still one more scene to go that introduced the Stargirl Season 3 villain.

Another title card popped up, noting that we were now at the Helix Institute for Youth Rehabilitation. If you remember, that was where Jennie was when Courtney and Pat came to find her, a few episodes back. She was searching for her brother there, but hit a dead end. The same nurse who “helped” Pat and Courtney previously is seen talking to a mysterious figure, letting him know that Jennie is still looking for her sibling, and not only that, has teamed up with some other younger heroes in a town littered with heroes and villains.

The reveal is a fleshy skeleton man who you might have mistaken for Marvel’s The Red Skull, or DC’s Atomic Skull. This, however, is neither of those characters.

Instead, the character played by actor Keith David is none other than Mister Bones, aka Director Bones. In the comics he’s initially a supervillain with transparent skin, muscles and organs (which is why he looks like a skeleton). He also has poison skin and super strength. Over time, he became a hero, and then the leader of the DEO (which has played a big part over on Supergirl).

Though Stargirl seems to be going a different route, Helix was a supergroup formed by Bones that tangled with a number of the heroes currently on the show, including Yolanda and Beth. So we’ll have to see just what his evil agenda is here — or whether it’s actually evil at all, given the whole “frenemies” thing.

DC’s Stargirl will return to The CW for Season 3 in 2022.
