New Movies on Demand: ‘Candyman,’ ‘Cry Macho,’ ‘The Eyes Of Tammy Faye,’ + More

What’s scarier, Jessica Chastain and her face full of pancake makeup and lashes, or saying “Candyman” five times into the mirror? Find out in this week’s new movies on VOD! Chastain stars in The Eyes Of Tammy Faye, which is out now on VOD after a brief theatrical run this fall. Chastain’s transformation is something else, but honestly, we will never ever tire of that chameleon Vincent D’Onofrio who is almost unrecognizable, as he often is, playing Jerry Falwell.

In the Jordan Peele-penned update of Candyman, an artist played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II learns the urban legend of the Candyman and is fascinated by the way the modern folk tale has plagued his Chicago neighborhood, and he intentionally summons the spirit despite knowing the terrifying risks. This is peak Bad Idea Jeans.

And finally, Clint Eastwood goes back to his western roots with Cry Macho, the latest film which he both directs and stars in. Eastwood’s last foray as an actor was in Gran Torino, in which he played an old “get off my lawn” type grappling with his own racism. Cry Macho features Eastwood as an old man sharing his life experiences with a young kid who needs a father figure. It’s not his greatest work, but it’s still impressive that at age 91 he’s pulling this stuff off, and with the backdrop of the dusty roads of Mexico, he’s in his element.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The Eyes Of Tammy Faye

There may be no set of eyes more infamous than those of Tammy Faye Bakker. Tammy Faye, along with husband Jim, became one of the biggest televangelists in the world in the 1970s and ’80s before financial scandals and a fraud conviction for Jim led their empire to crumble. In this biopic, Jessica Chastain amps up the camp to play Tammy Faye as she goes from young, impressionable new wife to legendary public personality who diverged from the evangelical right wing when she offered her support of the LGBT community and AIDS patients at a time when many others wouldn’t. It’s a treat to see Chastain and Andrew Garfield play the Bakkers, whose story is riveting and grotesque and would feel more Schadenfreude-y if Tammy weren’t such a strangely sympathetic a character.

Candyman

Candyman is a sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, and features Tony Todd reprising his role as the titular Candyman. But this movie is more than just a slasher (or hook-for-hander) flick. Written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and director Nia DaCosta, it’s got that signature Peele horror vibe where the creepy lore behind the story is layered in with racial undertones, social commentary, and genuine scares. When artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) creates an exhibit called “Say My Name” based around the Candyman, people around him begin summoning the Candyman and end up dead. Anthony has unleashed the Candyman, but he’s also unexpectedly learns a secret about himself that he never knew.
