Ariana Grande Cries Through Difficult Elimination on ‘The Voice’s First Live Show

The Voice has entered the live results shows of Season 21, marking a first for new judge Ariana Grande, who wasn’t ready for the pressure on last night’s (Nov. 9) episode. When it was her time to make a tough elimination decision on the show, Grande broke down in tears, panicking as host Carson Daly breathed down her neck for an answer.

The way eliminations worked last night was that the two performers with the top votes moved on in the competition. After that, each coach was forced to pick one last contestant (from the remaining three) to move on in the competition. While veteran coaches John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Blake Shelton used their experience to make the tough calls, Grande wasn’t ready for such a feat.

Daly revealed that the two contestants moving forward from Team Ariana were father/son duo Jim & Sasha Allen and Holly Forbes, meaning that pop divas Ryleigh Plank, Bella DeNapoli, and Raquel Trinidad were on the chopping block.

“I know how tough this is for you. We can see the emotion on your face,” Daly told Grande as she teared up, per Yahoo Entertainment.

“I don’t know how this possibly could have happened,” Grande responded, sobbing. “I just… I mean, everyone is equally… I don’t have any idea what to say. You’re all so brilliant, incredible vocalists and human beings. I will be here as a friend and mentor for you; I’m a FaceTime away. I love you all so much and respect you forever. Oh my God, this is hell! I love you so, so, so, so much.”

After her breakdown, Grande selected Ryleigh Plank — who gave a stunning rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight” — to move forward for Team Ariana. Bella DeNapoli moved on to sing for the Instant Save, forcing Grande to bid a quick (yet, still tearful) goodbye to Raquel Trinidad.

Luckily, Grande did receive some good news amidst last night’s tragic loss. For this year’s wild card spot, a previously eliminated Season 21 contestant from her team will earn a second chance. The player turned out to be the singing nurse, Vaughn Mugol, who was cut way back during the Battle Rounds.

But the coach was forced into two more goodbyes when the Instant Save sent Team Kelly’s Hailey Mia into the Top 13 on the show. Sorry, Ariana! Hopefully, next week, there will be no tears left to cry on The Voice.

The Voice airs Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC at 8/7c.
