Paul Rudd Auditions for ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ On ‘The Late Show’

Paul Rudd was crowned PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive 2021, but Stephen Colbert made him earn the title. The TV host first revealed the news on Tuesday’s (Nov. 9) episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “In these divided times, it’s the last thing all Americans care about,” he joked.

After announcing Rudd, Colbert cut to a previously recorded clip set at the “LSSC Sexiness Research Institute,” where he measured the actor’s mental and physical caliber. But first, Rudd had to give an oath: “I do solemnly swear to give the sexiest answers I can, to be a man and stay alive.”

The late night host poked fun at Rudd’s uncanny ability to appear “ageless” — when Rudd told him that he was 52, Colbert responded, “Sense of humor, very sexy.”

After the interview came a physical exam, then a “sexy” photoshoot that entailed everything from pouring water on himself while wearing a white t-shirt and jeans to dressing as a hunky construction worker and a monk.

At the end of the testing process, Colbert informed Rudd that he had tested “negative for sexy.” As the actor turned to leave, members of the LSSC Sexiness Research Institute began clapping as Colbert informed him that he actually had been named the sexiest man alive. “Don’t you see Paul? There’s nothing sexier than humility,” Colbert said. “That was the last test — and you passed.” Rudd wept as he was crowned, Miss America pageant-style.

The Ant-Man and the Wasp star will appear on The Late Show next week to discuss his new title. In the meantime, he has plenty of time to polish off his new crown.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS.
