Will There Be A ‘Red Notice 2’? Netflix’s Action Comedy Sets Up a Sequel

If you got to the end of Red Notice on Netflix—the new action-comedy starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds that began streaming today—then you’re probably wondering when the heck Red Notice 2 comes out.

Red Notice more or less functions as a buddy film for Johnson and Reynolds, with Johnson playing a strong, serious FBI profiler—Agent John Hartley—and Reynolds playing the impish, morally ambiguous criminal—Nolan Booth—that he is forced to team up with. Why are these two opposites working together? To take down the bigger, scarier criminal of course—The Bishop, played by Gadot.

Without spoiling too much of the ending, the final shot of the film sets up our three lead stars to embark on another fun-filled, zinger-tastic, heist adventure. It’s clear Netflix hopes to make a franchise out of this star-studded team of thieves. But will there actually be a Red Notice 2? Here’s what we know so far about a potential sequel.

WILL THERE BE A RED NOTICE 2?

There is no official word on a Red Notice sequel at this time. That said, the ending obviously sets up a sequel, so it’s no surprise to learn that writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber is on board with Red Notice 2.

When asked in an interview with Googler what needed to be done to see a Red Notice sequel, Thurber replied, “I think it comes down to if Reed Hastings, Ted Sarandos, and Scott Stuber want to do it. If Netflix wants to do it, and the stars will come back, I’m presently unemployed and tech avail. So we’ll see what happens.”

The good news for Thurber is that at least one of his stars is publicly on board. In a recent Today interview, Gadot voiced enthusiasm for the idea of a sequel. When asked if she would be back for Red Notice 2, Gadot replied, “I hope so. I love these guys and I would love to have the opportunity to work with them again.”

Whether or not Red Notice 2 happens likely comes down to how big of a hit the film is for Netflix. We’ve already seen the studio green light sequels for popular action hits like Extraction, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix wants more of Red Notice as well. But for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
