‘Dickinson’ Exclusive: Sue Has Some Thoughts on Emily’s Poem

After finally committing to their relationship at the end of Dickinson Season 2, you would have thought the Sue (Ella Hunt) and Emily (Hailee Steinfeld) angst was over. Not so, as you can plainly see in Decider’s exclusive look at the season’s fifth episode, “Sang From The Heart, Sire”.

In the scene, which frankly plays out a little bit like a horror movie, Sue and Emily are relaxing together in the Dickinson’s parlor, music playing in the background. While Mrs. Dickinson (Jane Krakowski) tries to ply Mr. Dickinson (Toby Huss) with some drink, in a rare moment of intimacy between the two, Sue decides to offer Emily advice about one of her poems.

“I needed this, thank you,” Sue says, sighing happily. “Oh god, now that my brain fog is clearing, I had a thought I wanted to share with you about your poem.”

“My poem?” Emily happily chirps back. “Which one?”

The problem is, the poem Sue is referring to is “Safe in their Alabaster Chambers”, which Emily sent not just to Sue, but also to Thomas Wentworth Higginson (Gabriel Ebert). Higginson is an officer fighting in the Civil War, but also an aficionado of artists and poetry (and later in life, in his real history, one of the main editors of Emily’s poems). But nobody knows that Emily has been corresponding with Higginson, particularly Sue who Emily all but told was the only person she wanted to read her poems after a brief brush with fame in Season 2.

“Yeah, well, I mean, it is an extraordinary poem. Just the imagery of death, and snow, it’s beautiful, Emily,” Sue continues.

After a pause, nervous, Emily asks, “But? Is there a but?”

Not a but — a maybe, offers Sue, who then provides some feedback on the poem that is entirely impossible to reverse, given it’s currently in Higginson’s hands. And as one last, final naive dig, Sue notes that, “It’s just my opinion. But I know that my opinion means more to you than anyone else’s.”

Watch the full scene above, and start chewing your nails off in nervous anticipation of what will happen with Sue and Emily next.
