Cowboy Bebop premiered on Netflix today, finally giving fans of the anime a chance to see Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda), and all their favorite characters brought to real life. The first season of the live action Cowboy Bebop barely scratches the surface of the anime’s saga. The Season 1 finale takes notes from only the fifth episode of the anime and one of the key characters of the show is only introduced in the first season’s final moments. So clearly Netflix is hoping to continue the story with Cowboy Bebop Season 2. The question is will there even be a second season of Cowboy Bebop?

Cowboy Bebop follows the exploits of mismatched bounty hunters Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, and Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir). Together they form an unlikely found family and embark on wild chases across the galaxy. What none of them realize, though, is how much each of their dark pasts is doomed to haunt them. Cowboy Bebop is full of dark humor, absurd gags, Wild West imagery, violent shootouts, and at least one bomber disguised as a teddy bear.

WILL THERE BE A COWBOY BEBOP SEASON 2 ON NETFLIX?

We don’t know yet! Since Cowboy Bebop Season 1 only premiered on Netflix today, it’s still a bit too early to know if the show is a big enough hit to warrant a Season 2. That said, Cowboy Bebop is assuredly one of the most anticipated releases of the fall, so we have a hunch that Netflix will be wanting Cowboy Bebop Season 2…

WHEN WILL COWBOY BEBOP SEASON 2 PREMIERE ON NETFLIX?

So this is actually a tad bit hard to predict as the first season of Cowboy Bebop found itself delayed once because of COVID and again because star John Cho suffered an injury on set. So it took over two years for one season of Cowboy Bebop to be filmed.

The good news is that the Cowboy Bebop writers’ room is reportedly already working on scripts. So as soon as Netflix gives the second season a green light, it shouldn’t be too long before they can get going. That said, if Netflix renews Cowboy Bebop by the end of 2021, it would still be nigh on impossible to expect the show would return in 2022. (Maybe for Christmas? But probably 2023?)

WHAT WILL COWBOY BEBOP SEASON 2 BE ABOUT ON NETFLIX?

The good news is we already have a sense of which criminals Spike and his buddies will have to track down in a potential Cowboy Bebop Season 2. Not only does Cowboy Bebop Season 1 end with Julia (Elena Satine) becoming the new boss of the evil Syndicate — rendering her a new villain — but we learn from Ed (Eden Perkins) that she has intel on a very scary man named Volaju. Vincent Volaju happens to be the big bad from the Cowboy Bebop animated film.
