Adele is known for her tearjerking ballads, but during a recent concert special, an emotional reunion with a former teacher moved the singer to tears herself.

The heartwarming moment happened during her pre-recorded ITV concert special An Audience With Adele, which aired in the UK on Sunday, November 21. During the event, Adele took a question from one of the concert’s many celebrity guests, Emma Thompson. She asked the Grammy winner whether any figures from her past inspired her or protected her from life’s “trials and tribulations.”

Adele recalled the impact that her former English teacher, Ms. McDonald, had on her as a girl. “It was just one year, but she got me really into literature,” the singer-songwriter said. “I’ve always been obsessed with English, and, obviously, now I write lyrics.”

“She was just so bloody cool. So engaging,” Adele continued, remembering that McDonald often wore sequins and taught street dance, although she was too scared to join. “She really made us care, and we knew that she cared about us.”

She noted that they’d since lost touch, but burst into tears upon realizing that her beloved teacher was in the crowd. To make things even better, McDonald joined her onstage. She explained that she left teaching to care for her two children, and a tearful Adele asked for her number.

“I’m so proud of you,” McDonald told Adele. “Thank you for remembering me.”

“You really did change my life,” Adele said. “Oh, and now I’ve got to get my whole face [of makeup] re-done!”

While An Audience With Adele is a UK exclusive, you can watch the singer-songwriter’s similar special, Adele One Night Only, on Paramount+ now.
