‘The View’ Flames Michael Strahan For Bezos Space Flight: “Has Not Thought This Through!”

We’re not going to be seeing the ladies of The View in space anytime soon. All four panelists — Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Sara Haines — have been on the same team on this debate, perfectly clear with their feelings towards the billionaire “phallic-off” space race. And during today’s hot topics, they went so far as to tease Michael Strahan for opting to shoot himself into space with Jeff Bezos‘ Blue Origin rocket ship.

Strahan will launch into space next month as a part of the ongoing Blue Origin missions, which have already sent folks like William Shatner and Bezos himself into the heavens. While a handful of celebs have thrown their names into the running to be next, The View will stay comfortable at their panel down on Earth.

“I don’t know about y’all, but are you going?” Goldberg asked her co-hosts, who responded with a wave of ‘no’s from every single woman on the panel.

“And not because I think it’s unsafe, because this travel’s actually much safer than when we’ve had big space disasters in the past,” guest host Kristen Soltis Anderson began. “I don’t like the feeling of weightlessness.”

“Oh, I do!” Behar cut in, interrupting with a quick joke. “I love weightlessness, are you kidding me?”

After bringing up that there’s a huge difference between men and women in deciding to go to space — men are more game to shoot themselves into the sky — Hostin had some questions about the whole prospect.

“Why would you go? What’s the purpose of going?” she asked.

“If he said it was free!” Goldberg said. “You don’t have to spend any money. You know that’s a hundred million thousand dollar ticket.”

But Hostin stood her ground, arguing that no amount of money is worth her life and safety: “I still wouldn’t go, even if it’s free. First of all, I’m very risk averse. I don’t think it’s without risk. Second of all, you get into a plane because you have to travel. You get into a car because you have to travel. What’s the purpose? Are you doing some sort of science research?”

Hostin earned another round of ‘no’s from the panelists, who seemed to have no logical explanation for space flight. Then, Haines chimed in with what seemed like an answer.

“It’s to say you can,” she said. “Michael drives fast car. He has lived a big, awesome life, and that means he has to reach higher and higher. You can’t now just drive a car, you have to go into space.”

“And he’s a big dude!” Hostin added. “Michael’s like, what, 6’3, 6’4? Why’s he getting in some little spaceship?”

Behar, ever the comedian, had another point: he’s too booked and busy to make Bezos in the first place.

“When’s he gonna get time from his 27 jobs?” she joked. “The reason that you want to do it, they say, is because you want to get a view of the Earth. Well, I say, get a globe and put it on the other side of the room. Boom!”

That earned a round of laughter and applause from the audience, who seemed all ready to go out and buy a miniature globe after today’s taping.

“Do you know what’s going to stop everyone from going?” Goldberg said. “The bathroom situation is interesting.”

The panelists, all talking over each other at this point, couldn’t get their disapproving comments out fast enough after this point was brought up to the table.

“You’re pretty much, I believe, in your pants,” Goldberg said. “There are all kinds of tunnels and things.”

While Haines asked about vacuums as a bathroom possibility, Anderson suggested Strahan might not even be up in space long enough to need a restroom. Still, Hostin was unconvinced.

“Michael has not thought this through,” she said, shaking her head. “He’s a clean freak.”

“We know that he’s going to have a great time. This is something he wants to do,” Goldberg rounded out the discussion. “And I say, go ahead Michael! Have a great time without us.”
