Anna and Maya’s middle school days are coming to an end. The Hulu dramedy Pen15 will end with the second half of Season 2, which premieres on the streamer on December 3.
Co-creators and stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle confirmed the news in a recent New Yorker profile, saying that they’d originally envisioned Pen15 as a three season series. However, other factors — such as the added difficulty of filming during COVID-19, their new parenthood, and new gigs — ultimately made them reevaluate.
The first seven episodes of Season 2 launched in September 2020, with an animated special following in August 2021. Described as “middle school as it actually happened,” Pen15 stars Erskine and Konkle, each of whom are thirtysomething, navigating the early 2000s as their 13-year-old selves… while surrounded by actual 13-year-olds. Naturally, plenty of nostalgia and endearingly cringey comedy ensues.
Pen15 has become an acclaimed original series for Hulu, scoring a 97 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and a Primetime Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series at this year’s awards ceremony.
Erskin, Konkle, and co-writer Sam Zvibleman serve as executive producers alongside Debbie Liebling, Marc Provissiero, Brooke Pobjoy, Becky Sloviter, and the Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer.
The second half of Pen15 Season 2 premieres on Hulu on Friday, December 3.
