‘The View’ Hosts Tackle Chris Cuomo CNN Scandal: “Massive Ethical Breach”, “Abuse Of Power”

On today’s episode of The View, the ABC talk show’s hosts put themselves in the shoes of Chris Cuomo. Yesterday, New York Attorney General Letititia James released documents from the sexual harassment investigation into the CNN anchor’s brother, former New York Governor Chris Cuomo (who denies these allegations). The documents revealed that Cuomo used media contacts to compile information about his brother’s accusers, leaving CNN to handle him as they see fit.
The View‘s panel had plenty to say as they debated what these revelations mean for the Cuomo family, and whether Cuomo’s use of media privileges constitute an abuse of power.
“I understand the inclination to help your brother… but you don’t use your position in the media to help him,” Joy Behar said. “Whether he should be fired, that’s for [CNN president] Jeff Zucker to decide. There’s a lot in this story that doesn’t feel right, although I do appreciate the Cuomo family very much.”
Meanwhile, guest host Jane Coaston said she believes Cuomo is in “a lot of trouble,” calling his behavior a “massive ethical breach” and an “abuse of power.”
“If he were reporting on this about someone else, he’d be saying that person should be fired,” she said. “You see people talking about these accusers like they’re nuisances… [It shows] the way power takes precedence over what is right.”

Sunny Hostin weighed in using her legal expertise, pointing out that while she doesn’t think Cuomo’s behavior is illegal, “certainly there is an ethical issue when it comes to journalism.”
“He’s doing this stuff in a time where we [just lived through] an administration that embraced the words ‘fake news’ and we saw this mistrust in institutions everywhere, specifically the media,” Sara Haines pointed out. “[CNN needs] to be an example of, ‘We won’t stand for unethical behavior on our watch.'”
Moderator Whoopi Goldberg tried to imagine what she would’ve done in Cuomo’s situation. “If my brother was in trouble, I don’t know how far I would go,” she said. “But I would’ve said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna take a month off, let things blow over.'”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
