Netflix has announced its forthcoming comedy special Death to 2021, which will premiere on December 27.
The special, similar to its 2020 predecessor Death to 2020, tells the story of yet another dreadful year through a faux documentary, combining archival footage gathered throughout the year with commentary from fictitious characters played by Hugh Grant, Lucy Liu, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Joe Keery, William Jackson Harper, Stockard Channing, Cristin Milioti, Diane Morgan, Nick Mohammed as well as others.
In a comical teaser clip from the special, which you can view above, an “average British citizen,” played by Morgan, shares her experience with online dating during the pandemic. “I got on quite well with one of them,” says the character. “We even had a cuddle.” The scene then cuts to the pair on a virtual date over Zoom, awkwardly inching closer to their computer screens.
Death to 2021 is executive produced by Annabel Jones and Ben Caudell (who penned the script). It is directed by Jack Clough and Josh Ruben as well as produced by Nick Vaughan-Smith along with Broke and Bones.
