Meghan McCain Skewers Alec Baldwin After “Tasteless” Interview About ‘Rust’ Tragedy

Meghan McCain may not be firing up hot topics on The View every day, and yet, the political personality has still found a way to comment on all the latest world news. In her new column over at the Daily Mail, McCain tore into Alec Baldwin over his interview with ABC last week about the shooting on the set of Rust. Although she shared a bit of empathy on the matter, ultimately, she was upset about the lack of discussion on both victims of the tragedy, Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza.

The op-ed is titled, “Alec Baldwin and ABC News should have known better than to air a pointless, tasteless ‘exclusive’ interview, while the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins still grieves,” tackling the interview and the rest of the Rust tragedy. During his interview last week, Baldwin ultimately denied even pulling the trigger and shooting Souza and Hutchins.

“I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never,” Baldwin told Stephanopoulos in a clip ABC News released Wednesday. “Someone put a live bullet in a gun, a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property.”

McCain has made her love of guns and the Second Amendment clear over the years, but still managed to criticize the understanding of gun safety exhibited on set and in the interview.

“At best, an innocent woman, a mother of a nine-year-old boy, a wife, and an extremely talented and respected cinematographer has been killed as the result of abject incompetence and negligence,” McCain wrote. “Something that should have never, under any circumstances, have happened.”

Next, she turned her focus to Baldwin. While she admitted she feels for him, she still said he veered off course in the interview into areas that weren’t worthy of conversation.

“I feel bad for Alec Baldwin. He seemed manic and anxious — giving confusing answers to simple questions and insisting he didn’t want to come off like a victim,” McCain continued. “But he spent most of the time talking about his life instead of focusing on the victim, Halyna Hutchins or giving any opinion whatsoever on what he believes should be done differently to make sure nothing like this ever happens again on any movie set.”

After Baldwin’s interview, ABC plans on releasing a 20/20 docuseries investigating the entire Rust tragedy. But McCain advises otherwise, as the Baldwin interview was ultimately a bust.

“Ultimately, watching the interview made me uncomfortable, a woman lost her life a little over a month ago, and there is still an active investigation into how and why this could possibly happen and Halyna Hutchins’ family is still grieving,” McCain concluded. “I would say ABC should know better and do better, but that would have had to have started with Alec understanding respectful boundaries, something we all know he has never been good at.”
