HBO Max‘s And Just Like That… revisits the lives of best friends forever Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) decades after we first brunched with them in Sex and the City. One name missing from the Sex and the City reboot though? Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). The iconic, sexually voracious character was a key part of the core group’s dynamics, but she won’t be appearing in And Just Like That… So does that mean Samantha is dead? Where is Samantha Jones supposed to be in And Just Like That…? The answer might not be as dramatic as you think…
And Just Like That… is a ten-part limited series reuniting Sex and the City fans with Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda in 2021. Now navigating their 50s, the trio has expanded its social circle to include a popular podcast host (Sara Ramírez), a posh real estate agent (Sarita Choudhury), a documentarian (Nicole Ari Parker), and a professor (Karen Pittman). It remains to be seen how these new characters will fit in with the original SATC ladies, but we do have some idea of what’s going on with Samantha. Namely, we can confirm that HBO Max didn’t kill off Cattrall’s beloved character.
According to The New York Times, Michael Patrick King confirmed that two internet theories were false: “Big (Chris Noth) is not dead. Samantha is not dead, though Cattrall’s absence means that she doesn’t appear onscreen. ‘Nobody’s dead,’ King said. Nobody? ‘Nobody.'” (Well, that’s true for the start of the episode…)
Samantha is fine, guys! She wasn’t killed off screen. Big isn’t a ghost nor is he doomed to die early in the series. Everyone in the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That… is a living, breathing person, albeit fictional. And it seems the reason Cattrall isn’t back is because she and Sarah Jessica Parker had a real-life falling out. Art is simply imitating life!

If Samantha’s not dead, then where is she? According to The Daily Mail, a source close to the show’s production confirmed that Samantha Jones is no longer tight with Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda. That and she’s now living in London.
“Sending her to Los Angeles wasn’t an option as we’d done that in the first movie, so having her character based in London really was the perfect way to keep her alive and explain her absence,” The Daily Mail’s source said. “Viewers will learn that she is thriving in England even though she has fallen out with Carrie.”
The source also implied that And Just Like That...’s producers are hoping that Cattrall will appear in a potential second season of the show (which is weird only because HBO Max has been hyping And Just Like That… as a limited series). Maybe they’re just hoping for a Big Little Lies-esque pick up.
As it happens, The Daily Mail’s sources were dead on. Samantha and Carrie had a falling out after Carrie dropped her as a publicity agent. It seems Samantha took it so personally, she stopped being pals with Carrie and Charlotte and Miranda. In an early scene, Carrie and Miranda talk about how it’s like Samantha is dead. But she’s not! Not yet! Not so far as we know! (And she makes her presence known in a sweet way in Episode 2.)
