If the extensive Disney+ documentary The Beatles: Get Back left you wanting to spend even more time with the iconic band, James Corden has you covered. On Tuesday’s (December 7) episode of The Late Late Show, the host inserted himself into Get Back footage to play Gary Thump, a previously unknown “fifth” Beatle.
Thump is a guitarist and pianist who can’t stop playing off-key, and often criticizes his bandmates.
“You know what, Paul? A for effort, but ‘Let It Be,’ let it shmee. If you’re looking for a banging tune, this isn’t it,” he tells Paul McCartney at one point, referencing the band’s legendary song. Instead, Thump tries to convince his disinterested bandmates to record some of the “diamonds” he’s been working on, such as “Jerry the Jolly Yogini,” “Omnipotent Jelicopter,” and “I Am Kumquat.”
Thump later admits that he’s “taken an awful lot of drugs.”
Sadly, The Beatles just aren’t buying it, and Thump gets rejected from the band by the end of their recording sessions.
“You know what, no one’s going to give a shit about this band in 50 years, anyway,” he insists.
Directed by Peter Jackson, The Beatles: Get Back is a nearly eight-hour series that features never-before-seen footage from the band’s infamous Let It Be recording sessions, revealing intimate new details about how they recorded their final album. Sadly, Thump is not included!
The Late Late Show with James Corden airs weeknights at 12:35/11:35c on CBS. Scroll up to catch Corden’s full Beatles parody.
