Is ‘National Champions’ on HBO Max or Netflix?

Despite the millions of dollars that college football players earn for their schools and the TV networks that air their games, the athletes themselves do not receive compensation in the way professional athletes do. In fact, only recently did the National Collegiate Athletic Association finally allow athletes to accept sponsorships and sell their own merchandise. But that concession didn’t come without a fight, and that’s what National Champions, a new sports drama opening in theaters this weekend, is all about.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, National Champions stars Stephan James as a college quarterback who calls his team on strike just hours before the big championship game, in order to fight for fair compensation and treatment. Also starring J. K. Simmons, Alexander Ludwig, Lil Rel Howery, Tim Blake Nelson, Andrew Bachelor, Jeffrey Donovan, David Koechner, Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, and Uzo Aduba, this feels like a movie that is going to hit hard about an important issue.

Here’s what you need to know about where to watch National Champions and what we know right now about the National Champions streaming release.

WHERE TO WATCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:

For now, the only way to watch National Champions is in a movie theater. The film opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, December 10. You can find a showing near you here.

WHEN WILL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS BE ON STREAMING?

We don’t know. There is not yet a National Champions digital release date and the production company distributing the film, STX Entertainment, has not had a consistent release strategy during the pandemic.

That said, we’d be surprised if you had to wait more than a month to catch National Champions either on a streaming service or on video-on-demand. (Meaning you would be able to rent or buy the film on Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, and more.)

The last four films released by STX—Queenpins, Gunpowder Milkshake, Kid 90, and I Care A Lot—were sold to streaming services for distribution, but there is not yet any streaming news for National Champions. Stay tuned for more information.

IS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS BE ON HBO MAX?

No. National Champions will not be on HBO Max at the same time it is in theaters. While HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home for Warner Bros. theatrical blockbusters like Dune, that is for Warner Bros. films only. Because National Champions is not a Warner Bros. film, it will not be on HBO Max—at least, not any time soon.

IS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS ON NETFLIX?

No. Benedetta is not streaming on Netflix. Netflix subscribers who are craving a sports drama can always check out Will Smith in Ali.
