UPDATE (2/9/22): ‘West Side Story’ To Premiere on Disney+ and HBO Max March 2

Something’s coming… I don’t know what it is, but it is gonna be good. Scratch that, I know exactly what it is—it’s Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story opening in theaters this weekend.

The 2021 West Side Story is the second major motion picture adaptation of the Tony-winning 1957 musical composed by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. While many were skeptical that this new film could live up to the iconic 1961 adaptation, critics so far have been loving the new West Side Story.

Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler star as lead Tony and Maria, the two young star-crossed lovers in this retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Rounding out the supporting cast is Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno, the latter of whom starred in the 1961 film. Musical theater nerds will be dying to see it, so here’s what you need to know about where to watch West Side Story and when to expect West Side Story on streaming.

WHERE TO WATCH WEST SIDE STORY 2021:

For now, the only place to watch West Side Story is in a movie theater. The movie opens in theaters in the U.S. on Friday, December 10. You can find a showing at a theater near you here.

IS WEST SIDE STORY ON STREAMING?

No. West Side Story is opening in theaters only. After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to rent the film on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, and more.

WHEN WILL STEVEN SPIELBERG’S WEST SIDE STORY BE STREAMING?

UPDATE (2/22/22): West Side Story will release on digital platforms on March 2, and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD on March 15. It will also be streaming on HBO Max and Disney+ on March 2.

IS WEST SIDE STORY 2021 ON HBO MAX OR DISNEY PLUS?

West Side Story will not be on HBO Max at the same time the film is playing in theaters. West Side Story is a 20th Century Studios movie, and only Warner Bros. films like Dune are being released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters.

However, West Side Story will go to HBO Max during the film’s “Pay 1 window,” which is the time period in which premium cable channels have exclusive rights to play the film. This is because even though Disney now owns 20th Century Studios, Disney is bound to a 10-year deal between 20th Century Fox and HBO that was signed in 2012. That deal runs through 2022, though HBO/HBO Max recently agreed to share co-exclusive rights with Disney+.

UPDATE (2/8/22): West Side Story will be premiering on both HBO Max and Disney+ on March 2, 2022, which gives you plenty of time to watch the 2022 Academy Award Best Picture nominee.
