Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas Erotic Thriller ‘Deep Water’ Will Premiere on Hulu

Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas may have called it quits on their pandemic relationship, but that doesn’t mean 20th Century Studios is throwing the towel in on their movie. Deep Water has been in release purgatory for quite a bit, and yet, Deadline reports the Adrian Lyne-directed erotic thriller has finally found a home on streaming. Hulu has earned domestic rights to the film, whereas Amazon will stream the movie overseas.

No streaming release date has been set yet. The original release date for the movie was meant to be Jan. 14, 2022, but it was pulled from theaters. According to Deadline‘s reporting, Deep Water is being sent to streaming thanks to “the feeble theatrical marketplace for adult fare right now.” That’s highlighted by Steven Spielberg’s recent flop West Side Story, which underperformed with a meek $10.5 million opening this past weekend.

Affleck and de Armas star as Vic and Melinda Van Allen, a married couple playing mind games on one another until they take a twisted turn. People around them start turning up dead, and everything becomes messy as they attempt to salvage a loveless marriage by taking up new lovers.

Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name, Deep Water marks Lyne’s first film since 2002’s Unfaithful. He’s best known for directing Fatal Attraction, which starred Glenn Close and Michael Douglas and earned him a Best Director nom in 1988. Alongside Lyne, Zach Helm and Sam Levinson adapted the book. Tracy Letts, Rachel Blanchard, Dash Mihok, Lil Rel Howery, Jacob Elordi, Kristen Connolly and Jade Fernandez also star.

New Regency just inked a new global theatrical distribution deal with Disney today. The production company, which was originally owned by 20th Century Fox, will be passed over to Disney after the 2019 merger of the studio.

Stay tuned for a trailer, release date, and more streaming information about the upcoming Deep Water adaptation.
