Golden Globes 2022 Snubs and Surprises: From Snoop Dogg to Selena Gomez

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominations for the 2022 Golden Globes this morning and, yeah, there were some snubs and surprises. This marks the first Golden Globes nominations list since a Los Angeles Times piece revealed real structural rot at the HFPA, prompting a wave of structural changes to the organization. But did the HFPA do enough to save face? Especially in a year where the networks are boycotting broadcasting the ceremony and stars are pretending not to care about the dubious honor of winning a Golden Globe.

This year’s Golden Globe nominations were certainly less chaotic than last year’s. There was no nominating Emily in Paris and forgetting I May Destroy You. Most of the Oscar frontrunners found themselves nominated in the Golden Globes’s bifurcated Drama and Musical/Comedy film categories. Critical darlings like Ted Lasso, Succession, and Maid were represented in the TV categories. And even nominations that might have felt like celebrity brown-nosing could be justified. (Emma Stone was very good in Disney’s Cruella.)

But that doesn’t meant that some of the Golden Globe nominations weren’t surprising. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association also managed to snub a few major stars, like West Side Story‘s grand dame Rita Moreno and Only Murders in the Building‘s Selena Gomez.

Here are the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2022 Golden Globe nominations…

1

SURPRISE: Netflix's Strongest Shows aren't in English

Maybe it’s not a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to Netflix’s ever-expanding “local language” slate, but the Golden Globes confirmed that the streamer’s best content is not in English anymore. The boundaries between foreign language content and Hollywood-produced fare have completely come down and Lupin and Squid Game took home the bulk of Netflix’s TV nominations this morning.

We already knew that both Squid Game and Lupin were monster global hits for Netflix, but the nominations for both series in the Best TV Drama category (where they’re up against Succession, The Morning Show, and Pose) and actors Omar Sy, Lee Jung-jae, and O Yeong-su proves that language is no longer a barrier when it comes to great content.

Netflix has long been a contender in the Golden Globes’s TV categories. Now they have a new ace up their sleeve: a whole wide world of talent.

SNUB: Selena Gomez, the Only 'Only Murders' Star Overlooked

Over the years, the Golden Globes have curried favor with Tinseltown by being the rare organization that celebrates ingenues throwing down impressive performances in underrated shows. To wit, many folks assumed that the HFPA’s penchant for this meant that Selena Gomez would be a shoo-in for a nomination in the Best Actress in a TV Comedy category for her electrifying work in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. As it happens, the HFPA revealed that they had been watching the series and were fans. The show received a nod for Best Comedy and series leads Steve Martin and Martin Short both earned Best Actor nominations.

You know who was snubbed though? Selena Gomez!

Gomez’s snub feels all the more shocking considering the show’s appeal rests on the chemistry between all three leads. By nominating her two co-stars, the Golden Globes seem to be omitting a key part of that trio’s charm and the show’s success.

Justice for Mabel Mora!

SURPRISE: The HFPA Still Likes 'The Morning Show', Huh?

The most classically “Golden Globes” nominations announced this morning had to be for Apple TV+’s The Morning Show. While the majority of the HFPA’s picks seemed to reflect a deep desire to regain critical respect — from really great nods for the likes of Reservation Dogs, The Great, The Underground Railroad, and Christine Baranski’s continued iconic work in The Good Fight — The Morning Show’s multiple nods were just…well, obvious for the Golden Globes.

I have no quibble with Jennifer Aniston or Billy Crudup picking up nominations in their respective fields. After all, both threw down impressively chaotic performances in a wild season of television. However the Golden Globes’s adoration of The Morning Show feels a bit like good old fashioned star-f*cking. After all, it is the most star-studded show on television, but it’s far from the best TV drama. Heck, it wasn’t even the best drama series on Apple TV+ this year. (That would be the criminally underrated For All Mankind Season 2.)

So The Morning Show‘s noms were surprising insomuch that they reflected that as much as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association wants to change, they’re still going to Golden Globe.

SNUB: 'West Side Story's Grand Dame, Rita Moreno

Ever since Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story premiered to rapturous reviews, Oscar prognosticators have said that the film’s starlets Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose have a shot at earning Academy Award nominations, but Rita Moreno is all but guaranteed one. I’ve even seen several insiders suggest that Moreno’s eventual Best Supporting Actress win is a sure thing.

Well, Moreno might win an Oscar, but she’s not going to win a Golden Globe for her turn as Doc’s widow Valentina. That’s because the HFPA didn’t even nominate Moreno.

Instead of choosing the nostalgia of honoring the original film’s Anita, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association opted to fete the new Anita (and Maria). Both Zegler and DeBose earned nominations for their work in the movie musical, but Moreno was snubbed.

Could this be a sign that the Academy’s voters might also choose the new Anita over the old? Or is it just a fluke?

BIGGEST AND BEST SURPISE: SNOOP DOGG

One thing no one predicted the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would do this morning? Ask Snoop Dogg to announce half of this year’s Golden Globes nominations. The rapper/TV host/personality isn’t necessarily known as a major TV or film star. Nor is he associated with the austere, self-important gravitas of most award shows. So when it was announced that the HFPA’s friend Snoop Dogg was there to help…it was certainly a surprise!

Also a surprise? How Snoop Dogg applied himself to the gig. He spoke slowly and clearly and even apologized when he flubbed Ben Affleck’s name. Did he nail all the names? No, and honestly, I’m glad I lived to hear Snoop’s take on Denis Villeneuve’s Quebecois name or the classic Cyrano.

Snoop Dogg injected much-needed levity into the morning’s proceedings and spoke at a pace that helped tired TV journalists (like yours truly) capture all the names being nominated.

So, thanks, Snoop Dogg! You were the biggest surprise of the 2022 Golden Globes nominations!

The 79th annual Golden Globes will be presented on January 9.
