Audiences of The View got to meet another guest host auditioning for the departed Meghan McCain‘s empty conservative seat today — and, shocking no one, they were left unimpressed. Amanda Carpenter, a contributor to CNN and The Bulwark, visited for hot topics today, chatting about Chris Wallace’s departure from Fox News, the Peloton twist in And Just Like That, and more. But folks were struggling to find a kind word to describe Carpenter after she dropped a few heavily pro-life statements into a discussion about the Supreme Court’s recent statements on abortion.
While Carpenter didn’t completely take aim at the co-hosts, tensions seemed high as the group discussed the first hot topic. The conservative guest attempted to make a comparison between Texas’s recent abortion law and Gavin Newsom’s similar ruling with gun control, but Sunny Hostin wasn’t having it. Hostin, a firm pro-lifer, argued that in order to be in favor of life, one has to denounce the manufacturing of guns and other weapons of mass destruction.
But Carpenter dug her heels in on the argument, leading The View audiences to demolish her all over social media. “#MissAmanda aww she don’t like it.. poor fragile conservative woman with no power of your own without supporting white male patriarchy,” one user shared. “So typical.”
Folks were even more upset by Carpenter’s volume, which was difficult to process so early in the morning. And although Goldberg and Hostin were able to shut her down, fans were still a little peeved by how quickly Carpenter tried to take charge of the panel.
But by the end of the show, some folks argued that Carpenter had turned a new leaf. They were impressed by how strongly she denounced the events of Jan. 6, a topic former conservative guests have struggled to address.
“Meghan McCain should take notes from Amanda Carpenter,” one user shared. “This is what we wanted to hear from her.”
Well, we’ll have to see what the ultimate reception of Carpenter is when she rounds out her appearance on The View tomorrow (Dec. 14). After that, she’ll be done with her hosting duties — for now.
